Pulled the starter for kicks trying to track down a starting problem. It looks like whomever changed oil prior to my recent ownership had always let the remaining oil drain from the filter over the starter. I removed the two long bolts from the starter. They were covered in oil sludge. I lifted the backing plate off about a 1/4 inch. It was all sludge. I've rebuilt starters before, but haven't seen this before. I tried to test the starter with jumper cables to see if the starter functioned. The solenoid worked grudgingly; the starter motor barely turned. Problem detected. At least the starter was well lubricated.

Another side of the same coin is an oil filter that doesn't seal well enough, causing oil to slowly run down onto the starter while the car is being driven.

Having the oil filter above the starter doesn't help out much. Placing a plastic bag around the starter during an oil change will prevent premature starter failure :thumb:

Has anybody ever relocated the oil filter on a SHO? I am thinking I may do it because my starter has less than 100 starts and I haven't changed the oil since replacing it. Anybody got any ideas on where I could get a kit or something?

Yes, people have done this. Usually with a dual remote system like the Amsoil so they can run a super fine bypass filter to keep the oil squeaky clean. Summit Racing also sells dual remote kits. Get in contact with shoz123, Paul Nimz. He can help you out with all your questions.

Personally I don't worry about my starter one bit. It's just a Kragen lifetime warranty rebuilt. A couple years ago I had a starter scare that turned out to be a stripped eletrical connection bolt on the starter. I would be more worried about making sure my battery cables, battery and alternator were all in good shape. I would like a dual remote oil system, but for the enhanced filtering, not for its starter protecting qualities. Think of all the other crap the starter is exposed to during winter. If you want it clean, spray it with engine degreaser after a messy oil change and hose that beast down.
