Rod Bearings. Do Them or Not??

My neighbor offered me the use of his lift, so I'll probably just do them myself. I'll take the car to a friend of mine to remove and replace the exhaust studs first.

Thanks for all the advice! Next couple months I'll tackle it. Need to do the oil pan gasket anyway.

If you have access to a lift that is a real bonus! Just make sure you can block off enough time to drop the oil pan and let the oil drip off the crank and rods.

I'm sure I could. He only uses it for small repairs and oil changes.

Guy has a 1965 Mustang with all modern suspension, brakes, 5.0L motor, the works. Has a late 60's Cougar too!

He saw me crawling from under the SHO one day and just said "hey, next time throw it on my lift. Be easier."

how difficult is changing the rod bearings? i have a lift at my house its just i have never done something like that

You're SHO has an attitude problem. I found that out the other day!

what about doing the mains along with the rods? Shouldn't you do them both at the same time?

The mains tend to show very little ware in these motors.

its cheap insurance in my opinion.

once the Y pipe is out its all downhill from there. especially here in AZ where the exhaust studs aren't so miserable.

The main bearings are not problematic on these cars. The rod bearings are.

Keep in mind, I would have a REAL mechanic do them if I had them done.

Why? They really aren't that hard to do... The oil pan was the most annoying part of that job to me.

My car has about 200K miles on it and has had Mobile 1 since 90K miles. I've been told that I should do them by some people and others have told me not to even think about it.

My car had ~175K, always on Mobil 1 since new, and the rod bearings were worn enough that I am glad I went ahead and did them. I recommend doing them.

For 175k those look pretty good! But rod bearings should be part of a 120k service. IMO

I changed a set at 88K that looked about the same.
