I picked-up a bolt in my LF tire when driving through a crash scene and took it to Discount Tire. I purchased these Continental DSw06+ tires on 8/22 and have put ~13k miles on them. They told me the tire can't be replaced and then recommended all 4 due to being AWD. That tire is at 5/32 and the treadlife warranty doesn't kick in until 4/32. So in essence, I'm out about $1400 to replace tires with only 13k miles. I might be able to get away with replacing just the fronts, but I'm not pleased with the durability of these tires. I like the performance but not the price.

Has anyone else had problems with their Contis wearing out like this? I have had them rotated twice since I've owned them so that's not the issue.

Did you buy the tire certificates for replacement? I would just replace the bad tire and let it ride honestly. I had to that for a couple of my Conti's because of various reasons (not worn out). I think they lasted about 25k miles on my SHO.

I did not purchase the certificates. Best case scenario I might be able to replace just the fronts.

All of my favorite tires wear long before getting close to stated mileage rating. I get about the same wear as you from Conti's when I had them and Michelins now. On my old SHOs and now my f150. Same with expected brake pad/rotor life. I drive like an a hole though. Always figured I have to pay to play. If it was me I would shave the damn tire or go for just 2. No way I am buying a whole set whenever just one goes f ubar.

I'm hoping I can get away with just 2 but I'm still concerned about that much treadwear in just 13k miles. I obviously don't drive much, considering I purchased the tires nearly 4 years ago.

I get it. I had to come to grips with this years ago with some brands/models of tire. The ones I like the most grip great and wear out faster than expected. Changing to a different brand is not illogical from a wear/cost per mile. I just drive a little quicker than most and want stopping and steering grip as good as I can reasonably or just beyond reason afford. Individual choice though. The extra maintenance on extra complexity vehicles like this can really show its ar se sometimes

These replaced BFG Comp G because those wore out in 20k miles. At least they gave me some warranty money on those. I like the Contis but never expected them to wear out this fast. I drive moderately fast but nothing too extreme.

Yes, while my favorite tire to date, the DWS 06’s don’t last. So it just depends on what you want. Less traction rougher ride and less responsive with 50K miles, or a sticky smooth as silk joy ride you have to replace every 30K. Thus far, I’ve found no in between.

As for replacement, I’d bite the bullet and shave a fresh tire and roll.

I just threw a set of Vredestein Quatrac Pro+ on the Explorer. I’ll see how that goes.

Ok, muchachos. I've decided I'm just going to go with the front two and wait until the others have hit 2/32 and get some warranty out of them. Anyone have any recommendations for new lug nuts? Mine are kind of looking beat after 112k miles.

Discount will sell lug nuts. Also get the certificates. They would have replaced the bad tire for like 32 bucks IIRC.

Here is the problem with the certificates... They are $54 each and only cover the exact model of tire to be replaced. The last set of tires I had were BFG Comp G. When I had the same issue a few years ago, that model was no longer available so I was SOL. And Discount wants $8 per lug nut.

(Also, I was just at Discount to get the other tire installed. The certificates last for 3 years from the date of purchase. So I was screwed on that tire, regardless.)

How much are the lugs at the dealer or online discount oem parts? Rock auto has 6L2Z1012BA for sale $7+ shipping. That was a quick search for part number so verify that is the correct one for this vehicle. Maybe under $15 shipping for a whole set. You could always shop a Dorman replacement that will be available locally somewhere

The problem I have found with aftermarket lug nuts is that they are nickel or chrome plated. The plating chips and the lug nuts rust. Though they are more difficult to find, they do make solid stainless lug nuts which wouldn't have that problem.
