well an update:
Car was towed that nite to my driveway. I have not even breathed on it since then.

Now when I was starting the car that nite the car turned over once or twice for a good minute not going over 500rpm. So from what I am gathering, if the CPS was bad then the car would not even crank or turn. I am leaning more to fuel pump now. Like someone said "the car is acting like it is out of fuel." No working fuel pump equals no fuel. We will see when I finally wanna get the rock outta the driveway and into a shop. Thanks guys.

Beth, you've had it happen, and Scott, you just seem to know everything (that sounds sarcastic, but it's not meant to

) Does it throw a code when the CPS goes.

And SmOkE93SHO, check the codes, I'm curious if it's thrown any at all, I'm just trying to get prepared when mine dies for no reason, or worse, when my wife is driving it.

Does an error code get set when the CPS fails? Sometimes. I had a CPS that was failing intermittently to warn me of its impending doom. During one of the occurrences, I just happened to be glancing at the instrument panel and noticed a very brief blink of the CHECK ENGINE light. I checked the codes and sure enough, it identified a PIP failure. There have been other instances when the CPS has failed for a short time and after checking the codes, found none to be set. It seems there is more than one mode of failure of the CPS. So in answer to your question, "It depends." It sure doesn't hurt to check the codes just to verify the component that is causing the problem.

Well the car is in the shop. They found the problem. Fuel pump went bad. How much you think this shop will be charging me for the pump plus labor?

If its over 300 I'll go smash the POS into a wall. The love of SHO ownership

pump is 1.8 hours of shop time to replace and about $100 total labor +pump is about 80-100. you can have it all done for less than $200.

I just had mine done. I did not get a motorcraft pump, but rather airtex which is a good brand from what I've heard. The pump cost $59, the strainer was $5.99 and labor to install would have been $124. As it turned out when they were removing the straps on my tank, my tank popped a leak (boo-hiss) and I ended up replacing the tank as well. So prepare yourself...they do get rusty down there. The tank is double layered metal, however, the crud and water in the tank do cause inside rusting which was the problem in my case. That same rust/crud was probably what killed my old pump. Grand total on my weekend repair...$349 for the whole deal.

Gotta love the SHO!!!

(BTW, if that happens to you...a tank from a SLO will fit. Don't let them fool ya just in case)
