I need help. My car is sitting on the side of the road in bufu and it won't start. I was driving along minding my own business when the car just died on me. I don't have a clue what happened. I did give it gas to pass someone but i dont think that would break anything. Well the car sometimes starts but it will sputter and barely go over 200 rpms, yes 200 rpms, then finally die again. Tried to jump it to no avail. I am desperate. I wanna go there and "send it out in a blazin' glory" but my mom said no

But seriously, I need help very soon! thx guys

I had the same thing happen last year. Purring like a kitten at the stop light, gunned it on green racing a T-bird SC, and it totally crapped out. I thought I did major damage.Call a flatbed and replace crank sensor, do 60k if your gonna keep it.

Totally sounds like a CPS man. Same thing happened to my mom with my car...back when it was hers

Only she was on the highway doing 65 in the middle lane and had to steer off to the side and sit in fear till my dad got there haha.

If the CPS failed it wouldn't even let the engine fire, much less turn 200 rpms.

see if it was the fuel pump/ clogged fuel filter I think the car would have slowly died. The car literally shut up in the middle of driving. Most of the time the car will not turn at all. Rarely does it stay at 200 rpm. I sent a guy out to tow it. Hopefully he finds it and brings her home. Guy before me did 60k. Obviously he did not do a few things. Well car is traded in on Tuesday hopefully. Thanks guys. I'll replace the cps.

You need to replace the water pump as well I believe as it is what is causing the CPS to go bad. It leaks right on the CPS and causes it to screw up. Mine has done the same thing for the last 3 or 4 years and no one not even FORD could figure it out. Came here and in 30 minutes my questions were answered and I now get to keep my SHO rather than sell it thinking it was one of those Lemmons.

Tommorrow I am checking the relatively easy stuff i.e. battery, fuel filter, plugs/wires. Scott you have any idea wut it could possibley be? I am stuck in a hard place. This is part of my downpayment on new car and it needs to be running to sell. thx

Sounds like a fuel pump problem. When you turn the ignition key to ON (not START), do you hear the pump whine with a steady, 2 second run? If not, the pump has failed.

What I was trying to say was that if the CPS is failed, the engine will never have spark and therefore never run on its own. Yes, the starter can spin the engine, but it will never run. Even at 200 rpm.

So basicly Scott, what you're saying is, if the CPS is gone, the tach WILL NOT move when cranking, it'll just sit there dead and not bounce. right?
Just trying to help clear that up, cause I can see how that could be misunderstood.

I believe so, I don't remember exactly how mine acted when it went, but I think my tach moved a little...but the car never had life, least not for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour.

Basically what Scott is saying is that the engine will have no spark, thus the fuel will not be ignited, thus you won't have even a putt-putt-putt from the the engine like it's "trying" to start. It just cranks the starter. Kindof like trying to start a car with no gas, it just won't start up.

Peace...

Beth is correct. The CPS is the signal source for the tach. No CPS signal. No tach reading. It will never move off the peg.

is it crankshaft position sensor......or cam position sensor i forget, but one or the other. and being the crank position senso makes more sense for a tach reading.

When my new CPS died, yes I replaced a working one with one that lasted 6 months when I did my 60k, I showed 300 rpm on the tach while cranking but no spark with a timing light.
