Eric VerValin said:If its a timing chain tensioner.. when my front one went out, I could see where it was hitting the underside of the valve cover, as there was only one small spot with a little wear. (it was all uniformally dirty except for that one spot.) With the cover off, you should be able to see, and if the chain is rubbing it would be a little shiner than the rest of the chain.
Eric VerValin said:Well I just had to find a set for mine the other day, becaues my rear one was out. THere are a few people here on the forums that have them, or RCM I know has a few sets for pretty cheap. But as far as a new one.. they are discontinued from Ford, have been for a while now.
And yea, the wear marks were inside the 'big ****' on mine, also another thing, and someone else will have to back me up on this. But the way they spin in there, a bad timing BELT, being a little loose for whatever reason, if it slips just enough to where there is a split second of 'slack' in the chains could probally cause it too. Not too sure on this, just something that looks mechanically possible.
Did you re-tighten your timing BELT tensioner after it ran for a while? I know I had to mess with mine once or twice after it ran to get it nice and tight. But then again, if the belt tensioner is a little loose and causing slack or whatever, I would think the sound of the motor would be off a little, have you noticed any of that?
Eric VerValin said:well when you say banging / knocking.. lol it kinda makes me thing otherwise. But really, Im not the pro here.. I'll let the others chip in a bit. I mean if you can see that the belt is tight then I wouldnt think so, and would look closer on the other end. Just take your time taking it apart, and it should be pretty obvious where its at.
Did you plastiguage your rod bearings when you did them? I noticed when my bearings were ticking, that is exactally where it sounded like it was coming from too. At least your in florida tho, where its not cold outside. Its supposed to get up to 45 this weekend!! woo hoo.. im gettin my shorts out, and working on mine.. hopefully I'll have my front suspension together, and the motor back in.. well that is if I get my rack out first.. lol

did you say that you checked the timing BELT tensioner yet?
