Hay guys, just bought my first gen 3 SHO. I picked it up 2 weeks ago from Brian, a member of the forum in Cape Canaveral FL. My brother Anthony drives a white gen 1 that has been in our family for several years.

Anyway, I need to do the spark plugs this weekend. I was wondering if any of you might help me put together a parts list before I just start tearing into it.

Thanks. Tim B.

NGK Iridium spark plugs have served me extremely well with my Gen III. The part number is NGK #6044. You can get them from rockauto.com
While you are changing out the spark plugs, if the ignition coils in the rear are good, swap them to the front with fresh new ones in the back.
While the intake manifold if off, take the opportunity to clean out the intake runners and the Lower Intake Manifold. Berryman B-12 cleaner is the way to go.

Good luck with your first Gen III. Hope it serves you well.

BTW...Cams Welded?!?!

Thanks for the advice man.

The cams are welded. 96 black, 220k on the body, 140k on the motor (factory replacement in 2001) transmission has 25k. It has a reman trans in it and I was meaning to ask someone on the forum how the remans hold up. This would be my first auto car, so I'm a little nervous about the trans even though its fresh.

I'm going to need to fix a small oil leek coming from the oil cooler as well as the tune up and it needs tires.

what kind of mpg do you get in normal driving conditions? I got 14 to 16 with mine lol, hopefully it go's up after a tune up and some intake and exhaust work.

just keep your fluid in your trans fresh. flush it about every 30k or so maybe even before that if you really want it to last. A Trans cooler would also help it greatly. It should hold up good

As part of being a Gen 3 owner ....start saving for another transmission.

200K plus on the original transmission and showing no problems so far. But I did just knock ******* the oak desk. :)

I think a lot of the transmission problems with these cars are a result of lack of upkeep and serious abuse.

As per the fuel consumption problem, most people seem to report about 22mpg in mixed driving, going down to 17 or so in city only and up to 27 or so for highway only.

Like ThatSHO said...keep flushing out your transmission every 30K or less. I use a bottle of Lucas tranny additive in mine and it is still running strong. I an approaching 150K on my 98 SHO. I do run the SHO hard from time to time.
A tranny cooler is a great "mod" to do.

As far as MPG - I get 16-18 in the city and close to about 28-30 on the highway. I have gotten a little over 400 miles out a tank of gas (highway driving). A proper tune will help you MPG somewhat...don't expect a ton of improvement.

I use autolite xp spark plugs. May be a good time to replace the coils too.

I just found out my car has a gen 2 trans cooler, Installed by the last owner.

I don't know if that would be considered an upgrade or not.

Just did my plugs @85,000..Motorcraft fine wire.

I swapped the coils front to rear and now car runs super rich and stalls intermitently when warmed up. Turn key off for a minute and car runs fine again:nut:

I think the coil in #8 is messing with MAF. Going to check them tomorrow.
