So how well does this work? Is this just phone mirroring or are you able to use the cars touchscreen to make selections and whatnot. I have not heard of this company or this mod being done on the original sync systems. Still not even sure if my car is considered having sync or sync 1. Pretty early 2010 my car.
Basically, it's a box that plugs into your radio (not head unit). I say that because there's a YT video showing them plugging it into the head unit and I had to contact tech support when mine didn't work because I had it plugged into the head unit. I guess they made a change over the years.
When you first receive it, you'll have to connect it to a computer and load the software for your car. Then unplug some factory wires on the radio, plug this in front on them, reinstall, and mount this box. I mounted mine beside the glove box so I can access it in the future if needed.
You can set it to launch Android Auto first, or go to the default radio, or remember the last position and boot to that. To switch between the factory radio and Android Auto (or Apple Car Play), just hold the top right of the screen for a few seconds.
I used it for the first time (driving) this morning. I take my kids to 2 different schools, and come back home to work. I navigate to all 3 stops in case of traffic / wrecks. It's important to note that this device uses your factory radio's audio. So, for example when you're navigating or playing Spotify, you must have the radio on the correct settings to play it. I.e. on the 2010 - 2012 (maybe others), you have to go to Media to enable playing music from your phone. Then you can open other screens.
So I turned on Media in the factory radio, held the top right for a few seconds to get to Android Auto, opened Maps and started navigating to the first school, and clicked Play in Spotify for Music. Just like other Android Auto, I can toggle back and forth to either app or split screen them. We have an electric gate that can be controlled with Smart Life. I have that app enabled in Android Auto so I was able to open the gate with the radio this morning.
So far, I think it was worth what I paid and the 3 weeks it took them to ship it. This is the cheapest option I've found to enable Android Auto for my car and it keeps the clean factory look. I priced out ~$1,000 to replace the head unit and buy all of the accessories needed to keep most factory options working. NavTool is an extension of the stock radio, so everything works as it did before. My backup camera worked fine and I have the option to wire several others. It has 4 plug ins, so you could potentially have cameras on every corner of the car.
This is wireless Android Auto / Car Play. I don't have to plug my phone up for it to work. So far everything seems to work just like a wired Android Auto would. They advertised that you can watch YouTube, etc on your screen. I'm still trying to figure out how to make that work. Also, this morning the unit would hear me say "Hey Google" but when I told it to navigate to another location, it acted like it didn't hear me. The same thing happened when it read my text message and asked if I wanted to respond. It couldn't hear me telling it "no" and kept asking. I need to trouble shoot that to see why it isn't hearing my response.
