Is there a cure for a sloppy rod shifter. Are there parts to replace the worn out ones, or a modification to fix the problem? The car shifts fine through all the gears but has a lot of play..Any help?

Kona,

About a year ago, I had alot of play in my shifter as well: by play i mean that when it was in gear, the shifter could be moved side to side about 1"... you need to figure out if the slop is coming from the front or the rear of the rods...

get underneath the car, and look at the rods that go from the transmission to a "black box" located directly underneath the shifter... by "shaking" the rods, you should be able to tell if the slop is at the pin joint at the transmission end, or in the "black box" underneath the shifter...

if the slop is at the pin joint, i believe the pin can be ground out and replaced with a run of the mill bolt (use the search function, as sdpatt posted a detailed procedure to do this)... if the slop is in the black box, there are two wear items in there that you can buy from www.shonutperformance.com i believe they're under the "performance" section, called "rod shifter ball AND socket bushing"... not difficult to replace... (that's where my slop was coming from, but not no mo' thumbs_u )

hope this helps...

edit: i just realized that you've got a '91, so i'm not certain that your setup will be the same as mine... can somebody else confirm this?

You may want to read this post about one of the possible locations for play in the rod shifter linkage. The picture was of the joint near the transmission end of the linkage showing the new bolt and nylon washers.
