I was changing my oil the other day and when I do so I try to check out as many things as I can. One thing that I noticed and had never seen before was a grease fitting looking thing on the rubber boot of the rod shifter where it attaches to the tranny. Is this really a grease fitting or what?

It is not a grease fitting. It is a vent and drain for the rubber boot to let out any leaked transmission fluid and allow the boot to breathe as it contacts and expands with motion of the shift rod. The shift shaft seal is well lubricated with fluid from the inside of the transaxle.
