I have a stock clutch with a fidanza flywheel. I had it installed last Nov. and got chattering, my mechanic suggested it was the pressure plate, i had it replaced and made sure he used locktite. Now i'm getting the chattering again. What is it, the rod bearings? How do you know when they need to be replaced? My oil light also comes on about ever 2k after a oil change.

That's oil level, not pressure, and shouldn't have anything to do with bearings, unless you're running so low that you're starving the engine of oil.

Is it leaking or burning the oil?

Did he replace the throw-out bearing when he redid the clutch? I assume he refilled the trans fluid?

As far as i know he did. But how do you know when the bearing needs to be replaced?
If you are refering to the TOB, it should be replaced with every clutch job. If you are refering to the rod bearings, it depends.
How many miles on your car? If the yellow oil light comes on every 2K after an oil change you are probably out of oil at that point. You need to frequently check the oil level. The car manual suggests checking your oil every time you get gas. If you are out of oil at 2K miles after every oil change you have a serious oil leak. Check under the car for major oil leak spots. And BTW if you constantly run the car without that much oil you are not only going to ruin the rod bearings you are going to ruin the engine.

The light is supposed to come on at 2 quarts low, not at empty of oil. My 93 used to do that, going through about 2 qts every 1500-2000, more if I hammered it.

After I re-read my post I realized my error. I didn't really mean empty, but obviously loss of oil is an issue here. I'm getting about 1 quart loss in 3K. If there was anymore than that I'd be unhappy.

Question about the oil level sensor.. I have only had very low oil once or twice, but I have never had the sensor light come on. It comes on before I start the car though. Is there any way to test this and the oil pressure sensors?

Thanks!

If the oil pressure comes on with the key, then disappears after you start the car, it is working. It has no test sub-sensor, but is actually in use when you turn the power on. No engine turn=no oil pressure=that light will be on if working.

Low oil, no idea. I don't know how the sensor works at all. I suppose you could put in 2.5 quarts after an oil change, start, check the light, turn off and finish filling. Shouldn't harm anything. Mine was coming on every few hundred miles due to oil leaks last year, and I'd drive on home and top off. No racing with the light, and you'll be ok.

I actually have to put 1-2 quarts in about 2k. I spoke to Tom@ SS...he said that the chattering is normal on the Fidanza flywheel and on the oil issue...he said it's burning oil and needs new heads or refreshing. ****, i just had this engine put in, last March.

Is the belt getting soaked with oil as well? My GL blew the front main seal and it throws oil only when I drive it, probably about a quart every 2 - 3 weeks.

I think if the rod bearings were going out, you'd be hearing something much worse than "chattering".
