i'm not quite sure if the rod bearings are going out would you hear a noise all the time,or would it come and go. I got under the car with my car stethoscope, and listened very closely around the whole oil pan.I hear absolutely nothing bad.Sometimes when i'm in the car,I hear a rattling sound very slightly.the rattling comes and goes only when i push the pedal from idle.It does not do it all the time.Mostly my question is the bearings.Would you hear at idle in park? Or just when you put in drive and push the pedal? I have a 95 atx(112,000 miles)I don't know if the bearings were done.I can see that a new oil pan gasket and silicone were put on at one point. Thanks for any input on this repeated subject

Not wanting to negate the possibility that something else might be broken, but My ATX I have had since 30k (93k on it now). If in park, I can give it like 1/4 inch of gas and I hear a light pinging sound that is not heard by many people (or dogs for that matter). It doesnt last more than a second and its not a single spark knock, its more like a marble in a nutshell clanging about. Has done this from day 1. Its probably the knock sensor doing its job, but it had me worried for a bit after I bought the car 8 years ago. Now I just ignore it.

Depends on how bad it is. If your hearing a "rattle" and not a "knock" it could be numerous things. Does it do it in park and/or drive? Does it sound like it is coming from the top or the bottom of the engine? Unless the bearingare REALLY bad you won't hear it at idle, mostly at 2500-3000rpm and at deacceleration. Best way to tell and also to catch it early is with a oil pressure gauge(low oil press. could mean excessive clearence or low on oil). In my experience with these engines you are better off changing the bearings if the past maint. history is unknown along with the full 60k/120k. I have seen to many spin bearings or go bad just because the owner doesn't do simple maint.
A rattle just as the engine is put under a load could be a heat shield, tranny issue, accessory pulley, cam chain tesioner/cam chain, did someone leave a tool under the hood(I've seen it). You need to pin point it a little more and it will be easier for us to help.

thanks for yur help.I will investigate furthur. It sounds as if raptor is describing it perfect. It just bothers me.it,s more like a rattle and not a knock. As for the oil gauge,I bought everything to put in a pressure gauge(the brass t setup)I really don't understand how someone can get to the oil pressure switch in the back of the engine in the middle on a 3.2 atx 1995.If anyone has done this, please tell me what has to be taken off to install the t-fitting.Just can't get to it.Thanks
