Pennzoil almost never passed our tests when I worked at Texaco Research Center. Castrol almost always passed. This was for non-synthetic.

I did notice - 3K to 5K change. 3K is the max recommended for Dino oil by any oil company for standard grades of oil. If the previous owner was going 5K on standard oil/no-name brand, I'm not surprised at the sludge.

Oh, in addition, don't use an engine cleaning system if there is lots of sludge. It has the potential of breaking larger pieces loose and getting into bearing and pump susrfaces with detrimental affects. I'd change the oil frequently (1K miles or so) for the first 5K miles, THEN run a cleaning solution. Regular oil turns black quickly (if good quality) due to the suspension of foreign particles including sludge. So a good oil will do the work for you, albiet slower, but with the proper chemical balance needed.

Tank, when were you at the Texaco Research Center? And what kind of tests did you do there?

I'd bet that's more of a lack of oil change, than using "cheap" oil. Virtually anything will stay reasonably clean looking with 3-4k changes.

My sister in law went to wallymart for an oil change (on ladie's day of all things) and when she got home she pulled the dipstick and still black. They didn't even change it :)

I worked there from '86 - '92. I was in the Engine Oil Research facility and helped out in Fuels as well.

In our division, we did the SE, SF, SG, CC, CD, EEII (Energy conserving II), the coolant testing for Saturn (and won the OEM contract!), Valve guttering (won a contract for a foreign goverment with that one), and others. We also did NYC Taxi tests and had some interesting results. We also did testing with some Garbage truck companies as well as several long-haul trucking firms.

Our test facility met all of the SAE standards, but our test were the most severe in the industry - high side of the bell curve for some reason. If you passed our tests, you would fly through the third-party testing facilities.

One of my more fun projects was a Detroit 6V53T that I tweaked to do 1 BHP/CI @1800 RPM. 318CI for those who don't know...

Compare that to the Cummins 444XT we ran at 468BHP @2100 RPM - and is 855CI!

im not a oil specialist, but i wont use pennzoil due to the fact my trans-am looked the exact same way when i pull the pan and the valve covers, at that point i knew it was going to be a full rebuild. it was so bad i couldnt find my rocker arms. since then castrol only, even though i spun a rod bearing on my crotch rocket w/ castrol synthetic blend but i blame the huge flatslides letting too much gas in the oil at low rpm.still my preferred brand though. i must say though people say bad things about quaker state,(free oil changes from my buddy at quik ****) and ive been running that in my triton powered f-150 since new and now w/ 117,000 on her she runs like a champ w/o so much as a valve cover leak. just my 2 cents

Things Change...

FWIW, I'm not sure what Pennzoil used to be known for, but currently it's rated as one of the best oils on the market, it has been consistently returning some of the best UOA numbers, on all types of engines. I think the old blend may have had some issues but their modern blend is very good stuff (if it means anything, I don't use Penzoil myself, so I'm just merely passing along the facts...).
The most likely reason for this is that Penzoil was bought out a few years ago. It's very possible that none of the old Penzoil **** base stock sources are being used now.
