Does the transmission Have to come out to replace carrier bearings? I think mine are shot and need replacement quick. Also, I dont have a shop manual and was curious to whether or not the transmission can be pulled from the bottom.

You may need to describe in greater detail what you are referring to as "carrier bearings."

The single carrier bearing on the SHO is the bearing that supports the passenger end of the intermediate shaft. The intent of the intermediate shaft is to keep the CV-joint equipped halfshafts as close in length as possible on both side of the car to limit torque steer.

Are you speaking of the bearings that support the diff. unit inside the transmission case??

Yes, its the bearings inside the trans. The end of the cv axle opposite from the wheel. I used a prybar to move the cv axle (on the passenger side) to find out where this knocking sound was, and there is significant movement on the trans end of the axle. Is there supposed to be movement here? I figured that the bearings inside the trans case must be shot since it doesn't seem like there should wiggle that much.

If it isn't the intermdiate shaft causing the problem, the tranny will have to come out as your differential is toast.

It drops from the bottom. Don't do this without either the manual or a clear set of instructions...

Most of the time these bearings, when going out, make a growling type noise (like a bad wheel bearing) when on the coast side. However, I've never heard of these bearings going out in any fwd vehicle. What type of movement do the bearings have in and out or front to back?

no..... remove outer cv shaft, remove 2 (I believe) 10 milimeter bolts on top of carrier bearing support and then remove your inner carrier bearing shaft. As far as inside thetransmission I don't know

It is a clunking noise, almost sounds like a sway bar link is broke, and usually clunks around a lot when moving from a dead stop or when going slow and hitting bumps. It seems to be a up and down movement, as when i pried on up on the cv axle close to the trans, it moved up and down. I dont think it is supposed to do this. However, it doesn't seem to be moving in and out. Like I said, it sounds like a bad swaybar link, but you can feel it cliunking more towards the center of the car, which is why I believe it is where the axle connects to the trans. Has anyone experienced this before? I do not want to pull the transmission if I dont have to, so I would appreciate any help.
