Does the transmission Have to come out to replace carrier bearings? I think mine are shot and need replacement quick. Also, I dont have a shop manual and was curious to whether or not the transmission can be pulled from the bottom.

Most of the time these bearings, when going out, make a growling type noise (like a bad wheel bearing) when on the coast side. However, I've never heard of these bearings going out in any fwd vehicle. What type of movement do the bearings have in and out or front to back?Black '93 said:Yes, its the bearings inside the trans. The end of the cv axle opposite from the wheel. I used a prybar to move the cv axle (on the passenger side) to find out where this knocking sound was, and there is significant movement on the trans end of the axle. Is there supposed to be movement here? I figured that the bearings inside the trans case must be shot since it doesn't seem like there should wiggle that much.
