I have a few questions for the SHO pros in the forum:

When setting up the timing on my V8, where does the "missing tooth" on the CKP wheel face? it apears that it can go on two different directions, assuming that "front" means that when I put it on I can read the word "front."

I assume that "cam welding" is done to stop the cam gear from spinning loose
on the camshaft? is that correct?

If one cam goes bad because of the gear spinning loose, can that cam be welded up and work? if so, how do you determine where to weld it on the camshaft?
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance, M.tischer, MN

Well looks like you got one of those universal tone rings like I have. Yes you will need to pay close attention to the tone ring and SHO timing picture and you will install it the correct way. Here is a link to the same issue when I reinstalled mine.

As for the cam. My gear was completly loose and after removing the cam for welding it slid down the cam and spun around. It can be re aligned and welded correctly. The only person that I can say that can realign it is NESHO. NO that being said mine still had the splines which would comfort me a little more. If my splines were completly stripped I would consider a new cam.

where would you go to buy a new cam, and should I buy just one, or the whole set, I would guess that the others are worn down a little, but are they worn too far to use a new one with 3 old ones??????
I still need some expertise on how to go about putting the universal crank shaft position wheel back on the front of the motor. It looks as if you can have it (the missing tooth) pointing to TDC or just below where the sensor is mounted into the timing cover?

The other ones will need to be checked.

Look for this when you pull the cam covers off. Granted it's been completely spun and you can see the metal shavings on the camshaft.

Spuncam1

Note how the gear has walked up the camshaft leaving grooves in it.

Same cam but its where it "Normally" should be.

The two-keyway trigger wheel is inscribed by each keyway. One for 2.5L and 3.4L, and the other for 3.0L. Obviously, you want the 3.4L keyway on the woodruff. You may need to use some toluene to clean off the wheel face to see the markings.

you only need to replace the damaged cam. The others will be fine and they don't wear the way you have described.

I don't know if I missed this in your post, but when the sprocket lets loose at the very least you will also need a couple and possibly up to 8 valves. Worst case senerio it let loose during start up and popped a couple of heads off of them since cold valves usually just snap intstead of bending which tends to be quite a bit more expensive as it also plays havoc on the piston(s).

Oh, I did forget to mention that I had the head redone already and a shop tried to weld the gear back in the correct postition. I think they are off by a few degrees because I am only gettin about 60 pounds of compression out of the left head.
When I put the head back on and the timing marks lined up, I cranked the motor by hand to make sure that valves were not hitting the pistons. This must be a mild case of cam failure, because there was no damage to the pistons what so ever. It was not a high RPM failure. I should be good to go with a new cam......
thanks again for all the replies to this thread...... MIKE TISCHER
