well...im very glad it is done, also that it runs great....still no working tach...and when it works it doesnt read correctly, it doesnt leak coolent anymore...but it leaks oil!...not sure where from...it didnt need A. waterpump. B. timing belt. C. cps. D. valve shims....so im pretty sure...that it had a 60-K done at 180K squint ...i think im gonna live with the leaking oil...i think its from a valve cover anyways. now it needs brakes ...anyone know how much new pads cost?

If it's the valve cover, you should be able to fix that easily. Don't give up so quick on it, be patient. And the front brake pads for my 1995 were under $20.00, so that's not a problem.

I like my new Hawk HPS brakes, $49 from tirerack. A lot of people here like the Performance Friction carbon metallics at about $39 from autozone. The hawks are probably a better pad. For me they're going to be a stop gap until I can afford 17" wheels/tires and wilwood brakes.

Gentlemen,
You own a car with power and performance. I assume that you like to put that power and performance to the test, that is, go fast.

If this is the case, why would you buy $20 brake pads? Any part you put in the braking system should be top quality stuff, especially the pads, rotors, and fluid.

Your tires and brakes take more abuse, on a regular basis, than just about any other part of the car. Don't buy cheap brake parts. Buy quality parts, but shop around for the best price.

Stopping well is no accident! Think about it! rangerj

You might want to ask Blockbuster and a few others about that oil leak. They may have some encouraging words

Why would I need expensive brake pads? Pads are pads, my brake setup is stock and unless I get the upgrade, I will not notice any difference in braking between $20 and $50 pads. I was planning on doing the upgrade soon anyway so why buy expensive ones? Plus, mine's an automatic, I can't drive mine hard, I don't want to bury my tranny any sooner than it will bury itself. :D

That is not true. Pad compound makes a BIG difference. Because the SHO's brakes are so small they work in a higher heat range than cheap pads are designed for. A pad compound that's designed to work well in the higher heat range will grip much better. If you can afford a $500 upgrade soon, what's the big deal about spending an extra $30 for pads that might keep you alive till then? Plus you might actually enjoy your brakes a bit more until you upgrade them.

he's got a 95 with the mid-size rotors. Using 20 dollar albany brake pads at autozone are fine, if he's planning to do a brake upgrade soon.

I'm getting ready to do the '96 brake upgrade on my 94. What pads offer the Stopping power with NO noise? Stock Ford? Carbon? ????
Thanks

Read this article http://www.shotimes.com/brakes/survey/brakes1.html
and then decide. Note, the Carbotech F compound is the same as the Hawk HPS compound. Hawk makes the compound and used to sell it to Larry at Carbotech. If you decide your going to hammer on your brakes enough where this compound might benefit, note that Larry improves on the Hawk compound by cryo treating the pads. If he still has some in stock then they should be better than plain Hawk HPS. If he's all out then just spend half the money on Hawk HPS. For just regular street driving on the 96 brakes, basic semi-metallic pads might be just fine.

FYI, the Hawk HPS pads on my tiny 10" 89 rotors add a *lot* of grip, *no* noise, and *no* dust. Really a great compound. Damn them for cutting off Larry from the supply. At his price range he's not really a competitor. I think there must have been some bad blood between them when Hawk was trying to buy Carbotech.

Thanks Rick, just about everything a guy needs to know about brakes on a SHO. My '65 Shelby had full metallic brakes (the old Velvetouch brand) all the way around. When it was cold it took two feet on the brake petal to get it to stop. The front pads were long ago changed out, but the rear drum brakes still have the old, 1965 Velvetouch shoes, and they still show very little wear.
