Mine idles at 1k rpm- im pretty sure my tach is off- cuz if i hardly gas it for take off the clutch kills the engine- also im almost sure ur buddies is a gen 1 right- im just guessing but the reason y mine is at 1k i think is cuz when i turn the car off it doesnt go all the way to the needle stick- i think my idle is around 700-800 and it sits at 1200 when its cold...and i think my fuel pump is bad to but i really dont think thats whats causing a high rpm- well nehow im looking into my situation if i find nething out ill let u know...until than im still at 1k lol..

I think the owners manual says between 750-900 while sitting in neutral. A lot of things have an effect on the idle and how smooth it is. Vacuum lines are one of them. One of the hard plastic lines that went to the egr valve was cracked. Fixing it brought the idle down 100 rpms and smoothed it out. Just something to think about.
