ticking from engine, not rod bearings.

I heard a ticking a couple weeks ago and did the rod bearings. after i finished i took it for a drive and its still ticking. It sounds like the ticking is coming from the left side of the engine(front of engine bay) and it only ticks after it has warmed up. dad suggested a valve, im thinking timing chains or somehow the cams have worn out their journals. anyone have an idea as to what could be ticking? (BTW the crankshaft journals looked fine, no scratches, so i dont think its rod knock). thanks in advance.

Edit: heres a video.

I have done 2 sho's that had a ticking sound when warmed up and both had bad timing belt tensioners. Once replaced the noise was no longer there anymore warm or cold.

could be your injectors, mine ticks when warmed up only, well they did, i replaced them and got rid of the noise. get a stethescope and poke around, listen to the injectors first. hope this helps some. good luck. Mike.

its not the injectors. i know what those sound like and can actually hear them as a completely seperate noise. i have a stethoscope and its still difficult to hear where the noise originates.

Put it on the rear(where the "****" is) of the front valve cover....

i tried putting it there yesterday and i just tried again and i dont hear anything coming from there. just the noise of oil sloshing around. i held it up to an injector and its the exact noise i hear, but the noise i hear is that loud without the stephoscope. does that make sense? could an injector get loud enough to hear while in the car?

also, when i just went to listen to noise, it is virtually gone at idle. as you rev up, it gets louder and more prodominant. it gets the loudest around 2100 rpms. hope this helps a little.

alright i just took the car out for a quick spin. as i left, there was a roofing contractor standing on the side of the road. when i came back he walked over to my driveway with the car still running and said he heard the ticking as i took off. we gave it a couple revs with the hood open and it sounds like its coming from the right(back of engine bay) side of the engine. he suggested that since i just did the rod bearings, that it may be a wristpin. is this a possibility for the sho engine? right before it started ticking, it saw a couple high rpm runs, which made me think it was the rod bearings.

Could be a number of things. I had a sound like that when my plug wires were arching. Could be the timing tensioner also. I haven't heard of a lot of these motors blowing wrist pins.

unplug the coils one at a time. When (if) the sound goes away, you will know more...

Unplug your secondary canister while the car is running. If the noise goes away, you found your problem. You can also "feel" the ticks if you put your finger tips on the secondary butterfly shafts. I also thought this was an injector problem, until one Grand Master SHO Expert (SHO NUT);) pointed this out to me. Low and behold he was right!

alright just went out and pulled the plug at the coil pack one by one and rev'd it up. still made the same noise. i also pulled the secondary controller and that made no difference either. also felt no vibrations through the secondary shaft. the "ticking" is very loud and sounds like its coming from internal but it sounds very high up in the engine. does anyone have a sound clip of a bad timing chain tensioner?

lol funny you bring that up. i was running 5w20 but after the ticking didnt go away my dad suggested going to 10w30 so i did and its still there. after the change, you cant hear it ticking at idle any more but as i rev it up, it gets louder.

Sounds like the cam chain tensioners. Try 10W40.

They use engine oil pressure to add tension to the chain...running the light weight oil may have damaged them.

If that dosent help, it may be time for a top 60k. You might have a shim issue or tensioner issue.

DO NOT RUN 5w-20!!!
ummmmm oops:biggrin:   Seriously why not? thats what my dad ran in his sho for over 10 years and he never had a problem. so you think i should go to 10w40 also? do you think that makes sense. i already changed the oil 3 times and i dont want to have to do it again if its not gonna do anything.

That last statememt would lead me to check the timing belt tensioner.
