Ok, I spun a rod bearing in my 91 plus last summer while on vacation and had to leave it in Montana. I am going to go pick it up this summer and I need to take all of the parts to fix it with me. I am positive the crank is gone so I am pulling one out of a parts motor to replace it with. I will also be taking rod and main bearings and seals. What I'm not sure of is how likely is it that a connecting rod was damaged. I had to drive it for a short while after it started really making noise unfortunately. It was still running when I parked it but it sounded like a helicopter. If a rod is damaged, can they be replaced from the bottom side of the egine? Also, will pulling the motor to swap the crank be any less of a headache than just dropping the trans and subframe? I am pretty well versed in the art of pulling sho motors, but I would rather leave it in for the sake of time unless it would make things more difficult.

regarding a spun bearing, 9 times out of 10, the crank and rod are scored. both are rendered as paperweights at that point. though, ive never done it, you might possibly be able to squeeze the piston out thru the bottom. installing it from the bottom would be an even larger PITA as youll have to compress the rings.

time for a new motor. You are doing alot of work and might as well change the motor instead.

My thought exactly...easier to bring another motor and drop it in if you have the tools to do it.

Hm, that sucks. I have the parts here to fix it but I think it would be easier to replace it like you said. I would haul a motor over there but I don't think my atx would do an 1100 mile trip with a motor in the trunk. :nut: Anyway, I would rather spend the few hundred on something else but you gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks guys.

Only had 1 experience with a spun rod bearing. If anyone here remember's Matt's white 90 SHO from the Maryland Convention? Massive rod knock on the front strait of Summit Point! When we finally pulled it apart, the crank, and rod was JUNK! An entire handfull of metal resided in the oil pan, and pickup.

FYI, I hauled a shortblock back from Mark Nunnally's in upstate NY back to Rhode Island in the trunk of my white 95.

I would suggest the following instead:
Rent a truck & tow dolly or trailer round trip, go get it, and come back with it. The you can address it at your leisure.
