Last week I had a newly rebuilt certified tranny put in my 1993 ATX for $2,100.00. It seems to me that under some power and at 4.5k rpm and above it has about a 5 sec delay going from 1 to 2nd gear. My old one didn't do this as bad. Any ideas?

I would report this to the rebuilder so they know you have an issue.

Then, I would drive it for a thousand miles. My last rebuilt trans took several hundred miles of use before it shifted properly - I think the new seals were too tight and took a little time to settle in.

If its not better in a thousand miles, make them fix it.

I work with 2 ex-Ford Techs with over 40 years between them. They both told me that it isn't stiff seals. Since my car was repainted the calibration codes on the inside of the drivers door was removed. I need Ford to run an Oasis report to get my calibration codes and then burn my ECM to make my sensors and transmission talk to each other. They said letting it learn by itself takes way too long. I'll let everyone know what the dealer says, how much and then if it makes it work right. After describing my problem they both said Certified did not calibrate the ECM and that the soft and delayed shifts are because the ECM isn't letting my engine sensors talk to the transmission correctly.

I am one of the few people who would welcome an automatic transmission in a SHO, but I started out with a 90, and always bought MTXs after that, thinking it would be great to have interchangeable parts. Well, after 8 years, I have never swapped a part from one car onto another... so there goes that wisdom.
However, when I see threads like this one, it seems the automatic is too sophisticated for any one shop to get everything right the first time.
Good luck with the fix, I would be heart-broken if it wasn't perfect right away.

Went to Ford and they said since it is OBD1 that they can't calibrate it. Went back to Certified and they drove it like I said a agreed that it is not right although it is OK driving slow. They said it messes up when driven like a teenager? They are going to order a part that goes on the outside of the tranny that increases the pressure. It will be in next week. Not sure what they meant but they were on the phone with someone asking what to do, probably corporate. I think it's a bad transmission but he said that if he replaced it the new one would do the same. I'm not to sure about Certified now, we will see next week.

the pressure control solenoids are notorious for going bad - did they replace it as part of the original rebuild? they should have, but even so it could be a bad 'new' part

To replace this. Is it called the EPC? Removing it with the transmission in place looks impossible. Someone posted in here removing a motor mount and jacking the engine up to remove the cover over the control valve?

I think Certified needs to replace it with another unit. I was suspicious because the one they put in didn't have SHO on the bottom pan. I asked them to put the SHO pan on the new one.

the epc or pressure control solenoid is accessed through the side cover of the trans - yes that can be changed w/o having to pull the trans.

they will not need to replace the entire trans to do this. the pan is the same whether it says SHO on it or not - many did not from the factory - and you know if its the right one if it has the correct final drive ratio, which is unique to the SHO.
