Accelerating at WOT when the 1-2 shift occurs, the rpm's rev as if it is not in a gear for a sec, then slams real hard into second gear. Shifts good at any other time. I just bought this car from a friend and it has been sitting in his garage for >15 years. I found a thread "Rough 1-2 shift. Anything I can do?" from user avatar28 who has not been active since 2018, in which he links to the proper method for a guy to flush his own transmission vs taking it to a shop and having them flush it (3rd post in the thread). I want to start figuring out my issue with flushing the transmission, but the link is broken. Can anyone point to this method of flushing the transmission? Fluid level is good and the fluid color looks good.

You do not want to "flush" the trans on a car this old with so much unknown history. You will create more problems with the car by flushing it.

Drop the pan and change the gasket and filter. Clean the pan out really good and then reinstall and add fresh fluid. Add a half bottle of Lucas with the fresh fluid. The Lucas helped firm up my trans when I added it. If you really want to be as thorough as possible then drive it for a few weeks and then drain the fluid again and fill with fresh fluid and the other half of the Lucas.

Keep in mind though that the ATX cars were not known for firm precision shifts even when new.

I did just as Chad suggested and it now shifts as good as I would think it shifted when new. It isn't a crisp shift, but I have read that these cars never had a crisp shift. I bought 2 bottles of Lucas, put one entire bottle in, and left room for either another quart of Mercon or the 2nd bottle of Lucas. I am leaning toward the 2nd bottle of Lucas. Thoughts?

While I had the pan off, I gave it a coat of Ford Red. :thumb: Thanks for the help!SHO Trans Pan
