i just did my rod shifter conversion last night, and i was driving it today. the problem is that my engine has a bad front mount, the engine tourques quite a bit. now that rod shifter is in, the stabilizing rod is being stressed by the engine moving. how big of a problem is this?? do i need to fix the mount asap?? this wont break the rod will it??

Fix the mount. Not only will it stress the rod linkage, it will stress other things like your exhaust.

Fix that mount ASAP! There are SO many other things that can break from having a bad front mount. If you wait too long, you'll also find your rear mount broken or excessively worn as well. Do yourself a favor and purchase the SHO Nut reinforced or extreme versions; they rock!

The mounts aren't hard to remove/install either. If you can perform the rod shifter conversion, the mount replacement(s) will be cake. If you need step by step insructions, visit SHO Times; I believe they have a writeup on swapping the front mount. Great time to flush your coolant since you have to remove the lower radiator hose.

The shifter's stabilizer rod mount has a poly bushing that serves as a pivot point so that the engine torqueing in its mounts does not produce a twisting force to the linkages. The shifter box under the handle has sliding bushings to allow for approximately 1.5 inches of fore and aft travel of the linkage along with the engine motion in the mounts.

The shifter can handle it, but that is not the greatest of your concerns with a failed front mount. Everything mentioned above along with pulled electrical connections from the alternator, poor handling under power and other more costly and damaging effects can occur from the untethered engine. Please get those mounts fixed promptly.
