I KNOW, I KNOW, REPOST! REPOST!! REPOST!!!

OK, 92 MTX, 190K replaceing the clutch set, RMS, oil pan gasket and sending unit this weekend. Wondering when replacing the rod bearings should I just use standard size or do I need to take a measurment to get the correct size? Thanks for the help!

Not to hijack the thread, but I think I may have a rod bearing issue as well. When the car is idling, a light tapping sound can be heard from the drivers side of the engine bay, but it goes away when the engine speed is changed. Also my red oil light flickered a little bit today, and the CEL came on as well. Is this a good indicator of trashed bearings?

[Where did my first post go?]

Need more information. My oil pressure light flickered today and it didn't worry me a bit. A bogged the engine in stop and go traffic and dropped the engine speed to 400-500 rpm. The source of the noise needs to be identified and the EEC codes need to be checked. The noise could be anything from rod bearings to a loose crankshaft damper to a bad accessory belt or tensioner. Find it with inspection and a mechanic's stethoscope.

That happens to me every once in a while too... where's the forum stethoscope?

One thing to help narrow down the search - pay attention to the speed of the tapping - a very fast tap will typically be related to the crankshaft, while a slower tapping will typically be related to the camshaft. At around idle speeds I'd guesstimate a camshaft ticking/tapping to be about 2-3 ticks/second, and bottom end tapping would be twice that speed. Fast ticking in conjunction with red oil light of death means, well... death. Best of luck on the diagnosis!

Well, I found out that my rod bearings are not trashed, the tapping I was hearing was from the transmission-yet another symptom of my bad throwout bearing. The sound can only be heard when the clutch is all the way out- I push it in, and the sound disappears. I think I dodged a bullet on this one.
