I notice you are a student.

Hopefully, your courses include English composition, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and proofreading.

Is the noise coming from the blower motor or from under the hood? If it is coming from under the dash on the passenger side and varies with the blower speed, you have a problem with the blower motor/fan. Perhaps it is bad bearings in the motor or on the shaft or perhaps some piece of garbage got sucked into the blower cage and is getting rattled around (perhaps a candy wrapper).

As for the A/C, it sounds like the clutch is bad or the compressor has seized and burned out the clutch. It needs more troubleshooting to be sure.

Well, since someone was a dick to me first thing this morning, I'll pass it along! thumbs_u

In your reply:
didnt = didn't
cause = because (at least it wasn't 'cuz' wink )
Also, use a space in between your sentence-ending punctuation & the next word; it's also common to put two spaces there to more heavily accentuate the end of a thought or sentence, although I do not do this.

Oh, and good luck with your SHO problem, too!

What setting are you using for heat? Anyone that also shoots air at the windshield will also turn on the AC compressor. Try using floor only or pull the fuse for the AC. If the noise s coming from under the hood I would think it is either the compressor or radiator fan.

See if these work, and try to ignor some of the stupid comments on this forum.

94SHOATX,

If you had the defrost on, then the A/C was on. You imply in you post that the heat being "on" is somehow related to the noise. However, your description of the noise as "annoying" does not give us much to work with.

Is the noise a "squeel", as in a belt squeel? Is it a metal to metal grinding noise, or a bearing screech? Does the pitch vary with RPM? Does the noise stop when you turn off the heater fan?

On this forum you have to communicate the problem you are having, in writing. The better you are at doing that, the better the responses, from those who are trying to help you, will be.

I can understand why you got irritated at the "cheap shots" that were taken at you by a couple of the other forum members, but you may want to give their criticism some thought.

What if they were the people reading your job application, and were going to decide if you would be hired?

I am not an expert in the use of writen or spoken English. I make my share of mistakes in sentence structure, grammer, and punctuation. I doubt very seriously that those who critcized you are experts either. Being able to communicate well, when you speak, and in writing, are very important. Give it some thought! rangerj

.....or better yet. What if members were replying to your post with run on sentances, spelling errors, and bad punctuation? I would think that you would have a hard time deciphering the fix to your problem.

The problem has been addressed by the members above: Your defrost setting (anything that comes out at the window) causes your AC compressor to be engaged. Coupled with the AC settings giving you the same noise, and the fact that you said the noise is coming from the engine bay, it's not under the dash. Most likely the clutch is gone or needs to be reshimmed. You can disconnect the connector on the AC compressor for a possible temporary solution.

I have been trying to influence the direction of the forum to a 100% technical point of view, with no BS, pretty much for the last 2 years, with no success. People seem to want egging and joking, so I'm tired of being the old stodgey guy. You're not the only one who has SHO problems, and I'm sure if I went back through your posts I'd find great remarks directed toward others. If you can't take a joke (but feel it's ok to give them) go pound sand somewhere & get a life. Open up a can of Grow the F Up, & drink heartily.

On a kinder, gentler note:

Ryan, what colors did you use to paint your instake manifold? I think it's one of the nicest color schemes I've seen yet on the SHO. If you know the exact brand and colors I'd appreciate it in case I decide to be a copy cat and do mine the same way.

94SHOATX,

If your problem only occurs when the A/C is engaged, which includes the times the defrost is on, then the A/C clutch is most likely slipping.

If it were the A/C pulley bearing, it would make noise all of the time.

You A/C compressor may be "dragging" due to bad bearings, a lack of oil, or a build up of "gunk" (for lack of a better term) in the compressor.

As suggested above, the gap between the clutch face and the pulley may have become to wide, due to wear. You could try a thinner shim to bring the gap into the .035 (approx) specified. Check the gap between the clutch face and the pulley with a feeler guage. Is it out of specification?

If the gap is not the problem, you may want to disconnect the plug at the A/C coil, so that the compressor does not engage when the defrost is on, as suggested earlier. You can address the A/C compressor in the spring, when the weather gets warm again. rangerj

PS Jason, you are absolutely correct. I appreciate the constructive criticism.

Those kind of replies pop up from time to time. You just need to learn to ignore that stuff.

On the other hand, the information this forum has provided and continues to provide far outweighs a snide remark or two.

This is not a free hosted board and requires $ to operate. There is no subscription fee. It's voluntary. Don't be so quick to dismiss donating here. I'm sure if you donated to a particular charity, and saw what some members of that orginization did on a daily basis, you would find objectionable behavior from some members from time to time. That doesn't automatically make the entire endeavor unworthy.

Peace.

Hey back to the noise.
I have a vibration type sound when the A/C compressor is in use.

Its not real loud, but is noticable.
Someone said its possibly the bearing, or clutch cap?

Is is it easier to replace the compressor?
