I know that the 3.0 sho does not have a conventional pcv system but does it need any type of service? The reason I'm asking is that the engine I just installed, although low milage is smoking some under WOT and does consume oil(about 1 quart per 1000 miles) Iwas thinking it may have a faulty pcv.Is it normal for these engines to use some oil? The engine was sitting for something like 5yrs before I installed it,so it could be another problem.Hopefully it is something simple.

I can not fully comment on this subject, but if you search around. You will find that many members will complain/comment that they have a car that uses that amount of oil. I have had 11 V6 SHO's and none have ever used oil like that. I have never had one that I had to add oil to between oil changes. ( 2500 mi ) However, if I had an engine that did use 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles, I would not be too concerned. Just my opinion.

I highly doubt you are burning massive amounts of oil through the PCV system. The PCV has an 'oil seperator' that limits gobs of oil getting sucked up. Also, at WOT, your stock PCV is not creating much vacuum on the cranckcase.

Have you run a compression check on all the cylinders? I would be looking at rings or valves... Possibly dried up valve seals since the motor sat so long... I have also seen stuck oil control rings on pistons I have pulled out. In most cases, I would assume the ring would dislodge itself under operating conditions.

is it possible for oil to seep through the plug wells and get to the combustion chamber? i know i burn quite a bit of oil but my plug wells look like a swimming pool...just a thought

If oil made it to the combustion chamber through the plug wells, you would have problems with compression as the plug(s) would not be seated. At that point, you would probably notice a hesitation.

The original motor in my '89 would gobble up oil like that especially at wot, when the a/c was on or during long road trips. I'd take off the pcv hose to check and there would be a pool of oil in the hose ******. Sorry to say, but your probably looking at piston rings.

Mine is around 1/2 that but your's is ok. When you take the intake apart you will notice oil residue build up in the tanks and on the air horns. All of the SHO intakes get this to some extent.
I suppose that it has some benifit at lubricating the lower valve stems in the valve pockets.
It is much to common of an occurance in a SHO to not be considered part of the design of the engine.
Oil will show as hydrocarbons, unburned fuel, in an emmission test. Mine has been clean enough to date (knock on wood).
The pvc sytem is so bad of a design in my 302 that I have to check oil at every fill up. Depending on the cruise rpm I've used as much as 1 quat per 100 miles.
What causes it is too high of an engine vacuum for to long of a period of time.
The engine just syphons the oil out of the valve covers and into the intake manifold.
When the car is raced the pvc hose hase to be taken out of the intake manifold and put into the air cleaner lid base.
Changing the pcv valve doesn't seen to change things much.
