My car starting shifting weird on the way back from college a couple days ago.. which is about an hour and a half drive. While in OD, it would keep surging up a couple hundred RPM from ~2500 to 2700 RPM. I guess this would be the Torque Converter unlocking?

But now it is shifting really hard and a code popped up: P0733

Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio.

What could be causing this? I ran a search on the forum and no one else has had it in gear 3. Gear 1 and 2, but no 3..

Hopefully this doesn't mean that the transmission is starting to slip (although I feel no slippage.. just hard shifting).

Any help would be appreciated!

Have had that happen too

Mine has done that for the last couple of years when I first take off if it real cold in the morning. I clear it within the first mile and don't see it again for several months. No issues but mine has alrays shifted strange with the compressor on.

Here's some info.

P0733 SS1, SS3, or internal parts 3rd gear failure. Incorrect gear ratio while commanding 3rd gear. Improper gear selection depending on condition mode and manual lever position: see shift solenoid operation chart. Shift errors may also be due to other internal transaxle concerns (e.g., stuck valves, damaged friction material) (TCIL flashing, California only).

SS3 resistance should be Resistance should be 15-25 ohms.

You can check the solenoid resistance from the plug. If the reading is not in spec then you should pull the side cover off and directly check the solenoid after unplugging it from the harness. If the reading is still good then it is not the solenoid.

Before taking the side cover off make sure the wire from the plug to the PCM connector is in good shape.
