Hello, I have a 2014 Ford Taurus SHO non pp with 66k. I bought it in 2019 with 42k miles on it. I have babied this thing, making sure I take good care of it. Did everything that needed done. Even changed the PTU fluid which isn't suggested. It is by far my favorite car and really hasn't given me any issues yet. Well, I now have a P0016 code popping up. First check engine light I've gotten. The sensor was replaced, and we did a fresh oil change. The code is still on. Next, all of the wiring harnesses were checked. Everything seemed to be good. Next, we did what my CarMD suggested, which was to replace the VVT Solenoid. When we took the cover off, we noticed a little slack on the chain. Code still on. Is the next step a timing chain??? Is there any other reason why that code just will not go away??

Thank you for your response and help! Question: Is there a way to pinpoint any of these issues? I’m kind of stuck at the moment and really don’t want to do a timing chain if I don’t have to.

You didn't happen to have changed the engine oil shortly before this diagnostic code popped up, did you? I've not heard about it so much on this site, but with at least some of the Honda VTEC engines, they'll throw codes for the VVT system if the wrong oil grade is used or the level is off. It seems to be a rather common occurrence after oil changes at quick **** places, even though they swear they used the correct oil.

Yes I have! And funny you mention that, my buddy who is helping me is a Honda mechanic. That was his immediate though. Fortunately enough, he's the guy that pumps the oil into my car and he put the correct oil in there. All signs point to timing chain, wish me luck!

FYI... dealership quoting me $2500 for timing chain, water pump replacement. Looks like we are just going to tackle this ourselves.

Timing set. I had to do mine with only 52000 miles at that time. I also did water pump while there. Had Ford dealership do it with all Ford parts so warrantied for 12 months. $3000!

One of Ford's greatest mysteries is why the P0016 code isn't properly labeled in the shop manuals. We have had customers reach out to after replacing every VVT component in the system only for us to have to bear the unfortunate news that they were replacing the wrong components and it was in fact the timing chain stretch they needed to address.
