ziptied it out of the way, taped up the wires with electrical tape, dumped some octane booster in it just to be safe, and cleared the code last evening. code came back on today during my lunch. I'm gonna try a crank relearn later today using my SCT, and if that doesnt work im gonna assume its either timing chain or vvt solenoid
Solenoids can get clogged over time but you said your car has been meticulously maintained so dirty oil clogging the solenoid screens doesn’t seem that likely. But who knows. I’m replacing my solenoids when I do my timing chains starting tomorrow.

Did another datalog last night. code was there but my knock sensor reading dropped from 3.5 on the previous datalog to 2.75, and on top of that I did the crank relearn. code came back again this morning, lol. I will say I got 18 MPG on my way to work today through a mix of city and backroads so if the timing chain is going its not messing with my timing too much since my MPG would probably be taking a noticeable hit. I feel like it is something mechanical but im leaning more towards vvt over timing chain since i've been driving with this code since late November / early december and my sympthoms havent gotten any worse (plus the fact that my bank 1 VVT reading just stays around 11 both at idle and WOT while my bank 2 one actually has a good amount of range). I'll figure it out, worst case scenario i just take it to someone i trust and get it all done just so it'll hold together till i eventually let the car go in a few years. regardless good luck with your timing chain today man

I got the new front turbo in and the intake manifold out today. Tomorrow comes the valve and timing covers and hopefully get it all done. However I broke a coolant hose so now I have to wait on that sadly

Did you end up finishing the job? And if you did, did P0016 go away?

Finishing things up today. However I am worried I damaged my crank bearings because I used a hammer and large socket to drive on the harmonic balancer since I didn’t have a tool on hand. But I guess I won’t know if I damaged it unless the engine shreds itself apart when I go to start it up. I’m pretty bummed and mad at myself about it. Here’s to hoping I’m one of the lucky ones that say it’s “ok” to do.

Sorry to hear that. hope everything goes okay when you fire her up. was the timing chain at least showing signs of stretching?

Yes it was very stretched. I could almost put a finger under it. Tensioner was allll the way extended too. But VVT solenoids and timing cover was clean and the guides didn’t have any gouging. Hould have been a lot worse but still needed done. Made it to 139k miles.

The car runs again! However the coolant temp warning turned on with the fans on full blast. Does anyone know how I can get the coolant cycling? Or do I have to wait for the thermostat to open? I have the drivers side tilted up and I was squeezing the radiator hoses but I shut it off in fear of burning something up.

Is the water pump connected all good? You’re def more knowledgeable on the platform at this point than anyone on here, myself included if you did that entire process by yourself. The water pump is just the only thing I can think of besides the thermostat. Are there any codes relating to anything coolant related? And I’m assuming P0016 didn’t pop back up

This doesn't sound good, does the car start with the fans on high? Thermostat installed properly? Slow down and trace your steps.

Yeah the fans ramped up after like 5 seconds. I left the coolant reservoir cap off. Is it supposed to be on to circulate the coolant? It only took 2 gallons before filling the reservoir tank before I started it up.

I haven’t cleared the codes yet as I don’t have a scanner.

So my experience that tank doesn't do much except maybe bubble up when squeezing out air when I did the IC was about 2.5 gals. Now my system never was fully emptied of course.

If the car was cold don't know why it took a few seconds and went high. If was because the light came on for sure.

Tak the thermostat out and see if this continues.

Check the oil stick and look for cloudy contamination.

No cloudy oil, and after letting it run and doing the 3500rpm for 30 sec a few times it’s taken in 2 gallons total. Upper radiator hoses is soft and warm to the touch and the lower hose gets lukewarm. Temp gauge still doesn’t move above the very bottom. Warm air through he vents as well.

I won’t have any idea what the codes are until I can get them read by my mechanic.
You could go to an autozone and see if they’ll let you borrow a code reader and bring it back to the car? Might be a bit of a reach but might be worth at least calling them when they’re open

I’ll call around and ask around today if I can rent a good quality scan tool.
