sunny San Juan Bautista,
I just picked up some oversize Supertech ST8A filters from walmart to use during my intermediate phase of my Auto-RX treatment. These are FL-1A equivalents (just like the Mobil-1 M1-301)

I compared an ST8A to the M1-301 I'm going to use when all is said and done with the Auto-RX treatment...when it's all over and new Redline 10W/30 goes back in.

The ST8A is just about 1/2" shorter than the M1-301. About 11.5mm shorter as best as I can measure it. That means it might fit the ATX without too much trouble for all you ATX folks who have been wanting to use a good oversized filter. And the price is right! $1.99 at walmart. That's better than the $2.77 that walmart charges for the Motorcraft FL1A.

For those of you who don't know, both the Mobil 1 and the Walmart Supertech filters are made by Champion Labs (as is the K&N oil filter).

There are some differences in the filter medium and there are some differences in the housing too (M1-301 used 8 oil input holes, the ST8A uses 6. Mobil 1 uses a red silicone anti-drainback valve. The ST8A uses some kind of black rubber (as does the Motorcraft FL1A). There are more holes in the perforated steel center tube in the M1-301 and the holes are slightly larger diameter. You expect to get a little more for a filter that costs 6X as much, lol!

In any event Supertech filters are fine filters. I took a look at the Motorcraft FL1A at walmart and it looked to be of high quality construction also. Maybe they've made some improvements ever since they switched to a newer box style. I don't think that Motorcraft uses as fine a filter media as Champion Labs uses in the Supertech line though.

Just thought I'd pass along my findings. Maybe some ATX owner would like to pick up an ST8A in addition to their normal sized filter (as a backup in case things don't work) and try out the fit during their next oil change. You can't beat the price, $1.99.

yep! The nut on the K&N does make for an interesting installation on an ATX. It'll fit but don't try to put any oil in it first!
