I have two MTX 12" RoadThunder subwoofers desperately in need of an amplifier. They're rated at 200W RMS / 400W Max and are dual 4 Ohms a piece. I really don't have a clue what all this jargon means, so I really need some help here as to what amp to buy for these subs! So far, I've heard JL and MTX are the top-of-the line amps to buy, so I'd like to go with this. I'm hoping to spend no more than $250. Any recommendations?

Name brand doesn't matter, look at the distortion rate, compare a few, they range a lot. a simple rule of thumb is 80% of your max amperage for the subs should be your amp rating, this way you can never blow them. so I'd look for an amp around 700watts MAX and 350Watts RMS (Constant wattage)
