Taurus safer than rollover SUV any day in my book. Lost my First 95 SHO to a Ram Air Trans Am turning in front of me. Got her buzzed ass in the right front wheel doing 50. Her Fridays leftovers on my windshield I got turned from Eastbound to SW bound and just got out of the car looking for a witness to my green light. Didn't want to get her in the door so I kept my hands on the wheel, a second to long. Cruise control buttons on steering wheel scratched my wrist, almost saw blood, gave me boo boo, car not safe, must sell.
I'm a believer and track my car in confidence.

One thing to remember about SUVs: They are not required to meet the same crash standards as cars. The car based ones are better but something like a last gen Explorer vs a Taurus the Taurus is going to win.

I wish I could find the pictures, but there was an old member, Hayden, who lost control of his SHO and spun into the jersey wall head on.

At 130MPH.

The car was obviously totaled, but he walked away with minor injuries, and I got some great deals on the subsequent parts sale. :)

Personally, I fell asleep behind the wheel and lost control of my old '92, eventually putting it into a wall. Reset the inertial switch, threw the parts I'd scattered across the highway into my back seat, and drove the remaining 2 miles home. I was doing about 75MPH when it happened.

Like Tommy, I track my car, confident that if I screw the pooch I'll probably walk away from the aftermath.

Now wait, the car was obviously an 89 with the rear shoulder belts and lack of an airbag, but at the end, somehow, an airbag blew anyways. I hate it when car stuff is wrong in movies.

Plus, how do the wheels just fall off? In real life, after resetting the inertia switch, I'm sure the car would have been drive-able.

Don't forgot he said the car only weighed 1600lbs too :nut:. I wish!

But as cars get newer, they do get safer for the most part with better designed crumple zones and better materials, but the Taurus is safe and I wouldn't worry about it. Just remember that mass always wins in an accident so don't hit or get hit by anything much heavy than you!

Regardless of the car your driving,
-How good/appropriate the tires are for whatever conditions you're likely to encounter. Buy good tires and check their inflation and learn how well they work.
-How much you compensate for extreme conditions.
These two things will determine more the severity of consequence of everyday driving.
... except someone else hitting you or causing you to hit something. In those cases a Taurus (or most any sedan or coupe) will be hard to roll over unless tripped or dropped off sideways.

When the sudden stop occurs the unibody of the taurus provides reasonably comparable crash zones to other manufacturer's.

There are just some types of crashes where it isn't going to make a difference what you're in. I suspect many of those crashes occur due to bad judgment on someone's part.:munch:

If I had to choose, I'd pick my SHO over my Jimmy when it comes to safety. At least I can try to get out of the way in the SHO. Evasive maneuvering in a Jimmy would likely end up with me rolling it. For instance if someone in the oncoming lane suddenly swerved in front of me I'd have no choice but to brace for impact. Either way having a vehicle that can get you out of trouble safely is too often overlooked.

Mass does not always win. Just look up that IIHS crash of the '59 Bel Air vs the '09 Malibu

Yeah, that was my Mom's logic of getting me a newer and heavier car. I was originally going to handed down the family station wagon but she decided it was was too fast (it's a 05' Dodge Magnum w/ the 5.7 HEMI :) ). And idk where i remember reading this but I think you were the one that said that you designed the sub frame on the new Fusion? If so, you have my dream job. I really want to be a Ford engineer :)

I have brand new tires, thankfully, but even those break free in rainy weather (don't ask me how I know that, haha). I will gain a better understand of how to handle a car in bad weather the longer I drive.........hopefully....haha. Thanks for the tips

I don't like SUV's........I have this unreasonable fear of flipping the thing over in an emergency maneuver....haha

You think that video was bad, check this one out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N6heV_cxjY. And it's funny because my step brother has the same jeep in this video and his parents bought it because "it seemed safe." haha. Lets just say, I am not sitting in that back seat anymore.......haha

wow, I looked at that on youtube, I guess there is a good reason for all that stuff under the hood. look at all the room under the hood of a bel air= alot of empty space then look at a modern car there is hardly any space.

I am curious about a head on collision of a Taurus and a jimmy. the jimmy might end up in the windshield of the Taurus.

My 95 got rear ended on the highway while coming to a emergency stop (due to another accident) The other car was only doing 25 or so. I fixed it. Needed a new bumper and the trunk pulled a little.

Then I got into a front end crash. A lady turned right infront of me while I was doing 40. I hitted the car right in the front wheel.
The car was totaled, but both me and the GF walked away. I took the ride home in the towing, jumped into the other car and went to work.

BTW, that car is still running, I repaired everything and got it inspected. Still running good and straight.
They are indeed very safe cars. And i'd MUCH rather have a serious hit with my SHO than my 7500 pounds F-350.

50mph into a relatively stationary Chevy Malibu making a left hand turn. Resulted in a right knee injury (only because the driver locked their leg slamming the brake), air bag scratches on the arm and a pair of bent glasses. Even the doors still opened fine, only thing was the horn was stuck in the on position.

That seemed to be a pretty good collision. I'm glad you were both ok! The car on the other hand is bleeding coolant! Haha. Just out of curiosity, was the other driver found at fault?

Happy to see all u guys have lived to tell the tales :)

You know why? They were driving a Taurus :)

Wow. Im glad the driver was ok, that seemed to be a rather harsh hit. The front seemed to have held up well. Thanks for sharing!!
