Well, my 7k mile waterpump is leaking (yay), so it's time for me to take the front of the engine apart.

I'm going to replace the oil seal that my mechanic didn't install correctly (?), and I've read the National 710220 is the replacement.
Somewhere around here I read that one brand fit a bit better than another, but my search was inconclusive. I don't remember who stated it either :( Anyone have a clue? :)

TIA,

The National is supposed to be a perfect fit. The Ford seal I know is a perfect fit. For some reason the FelPro seal comes to mind as being the one which isn't a perfect fit although that seems strange since National and FelPro are both Federal Mogul so I would suspect that are the same seal? shrug

I think it was Fred Hurder Jr. who mentioned the National seal fitting better than others. Really, if you have any doubts just pay a few dollars more and get a Ford seal.

I used a Chicago Rawhide seal. It fit very well. The part # is CR 16041. or CR 41*62*8 CRW1 R. Copied that right off the empty box cause its still sitting on my desk. I figured Someone could use the info. Oh I got it a UAP NAPA. Cost me 9$ canadian. Thats about 5 bucks US.

I just installed a national seal on my SHO.

It was VERY, VERY tight. And took some serious effort to get it installed correctly. I wound up using a very large socket, combined with a hammer so install it

But I guess to tight is better than loose :p

Hmmm. Maybe the safest bet is to just stick with the Ford seal then. My memory on what was said must be wrong. Chicago Rawhide, that's interesting. If it fits well then that's cool.

When I did my front main I just put a light coat of grease or assembly **** (can't remember which...all I know is it was Redline, hahahahaha! lol finger ) on the inner lip as well as on the crank and the Ford seal slid right into place with just gentle pressure from my two fingers here finger

Just installed a National seal on my friend's 89. Didn't have any problems getting it fit at all. Easy to get over the crank and snug fit in place.

I believe it was I who you quoted as saying that the National 710220 is a direct repalcement for the Ford seal and the Fel-Pro part being a much tighter fit. I had a very difficult a time trying to get the Fel-Pro seal into one SHO's housing. Even after saying that, I will add that you want the seal to be a snug fit. I use the smoothly rounded handle end of a 3/8" socket wrench to press the seal flush into the housing.

I don't know which brand it is but I bought the one from rock auto. when I installed it I just put some assembly **** on the edges and that thing just slid right in i installed it completel by hand no need to dive it in at all.
I still hit it to seat it but installation was easy

The CR seal works great & fits like it should. But requires more care installing than the ford type seals.
Yes it does fit tight and you want to be careful installing it. I used a half piece of pipe thats cut down its length and just long enough to tap it with a dead blow hammer slowly working around the seal till it was completely seated.
