I got as far as bearing #3 tonight, similar to your's but a little more copper showing. This is on my dad's 89 with 113K. Everything went smoothly except for that broken exhaust stud :(

O thats nothing, i stripped the nut on the oil pan where the front engine mount is, i had to take that whole bracket off to get tools in there to get it off, i would have love to break an exhaust stud lol.

What are the bearings made of? Mine are original at 171K. Is that a copper core with a stainless coating?

What happens when a rod bearing gets spun?

Can you test your oil for copper particles as an indicator?

Is there one brand thats better than another for the rod bearings?

Thanks

Not sure their exact material.

when a rod spins you can grind the crank and run undersize bearings or replace the motor

More than likely you can test the oil but it wouldnt be worth it as far as expense

I think clevite is the only manufacturer for bearings avaible for the sho.

if you do the work yourself, i believe it's somewere in the range of 65.00 for the bearings, and whatever you can get a oil pan gasket for. it's a easy job, just getting to the bearings is were all the work is. but it's well worth it. i have done mine, i didn't have any knocking or anything but i had alot of milage so i wanted to have the peace of mind knowing now what shape there in.

I did it to Bandit back in the fall and it was right around 100 bucks for everything and thats even including the food i bought during the break hehe. It was my first time and i started at around 8 that morning and got done around 8 that night cuz i took my time and made sure everything was done right. When i started bandit up he had a new lease on life. I plan on doing this project again pretty soon on Bandito. I just have the problem with not having enough time on my hands. Before i did the bearing job on bandit i could hear a light tapping noise at around 2500 to 3,000 rpm driving through neighborhoods with the windows down. All of mine looked ok except for the last one furthest from the oil pump. My guess is that it got starved of oil at some point. It had 153k on it when i did that. The car ive got now has around 165k on it with meticulous maintanance history from day one and i dont hear any noise or see anything weird but i still want to do it for peace of mind.

I just had the rod bearings replaced @ 227K and all 6 rod-side bearings were showing copper. Here is a site to purchase the bearings. I bought the kit and paid a mechanic about $210 to install the bearings. RCM delivered the kit quickly and they were so well packaged you'd have thought they were sending Fabrege eggs.

As you can see the bearings alone cost $40 plus shipping and the kit adds another $20.

I'm assuming the std size rod bearings will be fine? My MTX has 172K on it, there really isn't any noticeable ticking. Just want to give her a new lease on life.

Engine is original, no rebuilds...yet.

most just change the rod bearings.

Ive heard that you can actually do the mains with the motor in the car, but I would wait to get it on a stand to do those. Not much room in there.

std size is fine. At 172k, now would be a great time to change the bearings. Remember there are no warning signs to bearing failure. If you hear something, it's usually too late.

Rod bearing replacement on high mileage engines is almost scheduled maintenance.
