First off, I never said I was cancelling. The thought is heavy on my mind and it's in regards to the hotel, not the convention.

I am not in panic mode either. Definitely a hightened and aware mode, but not a panic. There's nothing to panic about. It's a decision to make either way.

I am going to check out other hotels to see what is out there and where else to go without a doubt.

Just being on the safe side.

About the bowling alley, there is plenty of parking. Of all the things I have to worry about this time of year, that bowling alley isn't one of them.

I am working with the hotel and CVB right now, we won't need anyone to check up on them. I will be making another trip up next week to see in person.

Some options include changing to another hotel (not my first option, but one I am keeping open), or discounts for those that stay at this hotel. Also, for those that don't want to stay at that hotel, I may ask that anyone that wants, be placed at a nearby hotel with the features they want. I don't expect a lot of people to take that option, but I want it to be there.

If anyone wants to make alternate reservations, then go ahead, you can cancel all of them up to the day before the reservation, some the day OF the reservation.

Man, I just didn't need this right now.

Having intimate knowledge of of the hotels in that area (thanks to being a pizza delivery guy over there) I can tell you that most of the hotels round there aren't that great, with a few exceptions.....

Mandy has apparently covered most of em, but here's a couple she might've missed.....

There's a Country Inn and Suites right off the highway. Somewhat off the beaten path, but it's nice digs and has a good sized parking lot. There's also a Lee's Inn right on the airport grounds that's got a really nice parking lot. Both have pools if memory serves. I frequented them when I delivered pizzas, and never had any problems. They were always clean, quiet and the staff was VERY nice. Just the $.02 of the pizza guy from that area.

I agree with don, no need to worry yet and although i need no hotel I'm still more then happy to help anyone who needs info about the area. Again Since Holiday Inn is the "host Hotel" staying close to it if not in is is the best idea. I know someone has said it already but not alot of time will be spent in the hotel itself.
Those of you with kids please keep in touch with me I'm a licensed daycare and sometimes during the week I have a few spots if you need during the day and pretty much free a few of the evenings for event's that you would not like to take the children too.

About the other hotels, not many of them have the banquet rooms and meeting rooms we need. So they are OK for putting some people in, but not as a host hotel.

Stay tuned, should have some info by next week.

I don't see what the problem is. If you want a pool book a room at the Hawthorn Suites. I just did.

We still need a hotel with large enough banquet rooms. That makes it hard to find a replacement hotel. Some of us can stay at the HS and some can stay at the Holiday Inn. And everybody can use the other hotel's pool :)

My thought's exactly.... Howthorne is abut 20 step's from the Holiday Inn....

Yeah, but that's a LOOOOOONG freakin' way after a parking lot party. Just ask Mr. A. about the table he slept under. :laugh_ti: :laugh_ti:

All kidding aside....it matters not for most which hotel is used for sleeping accommodations. There are some with kids who it does matter (pool wise, etc.) and those should choose the hotel with the pool on-site. Regardless, the convention is an event not to be missed and it will be fun.

Don, don't worry so much. Easier said than done, I know. We know that none of this is "your fault" and you do a fantastic job at organizing things. Some things are just beyond your control, sometimes that's a fact hard to admit and accept. I know that from personal experience.

Shit happens and when/if it does we'll just go with the flow just like we always do. No need in worrying about spilled milk when it hasn't even been poured into the glass yet. Everything will come out fine in the end I'm sure, so relax. ;)

x2. Better hurry though before they're all gone. BTW, rates are $82 for queen rooms IIRC.

Problem with hotels is, that for what you pay per night, rarely are you under the impression that what you get is worth what you pay, with rare exception. Knowing the scope of what they were doing over there, I knew that they were not going to be done. When I talked to them a while back (because I live(d) about 5 miles away from the hotel) she said "sure, we'll be finished" but seeing jobsites all day, I doubted that they would be done. I'm sure it was just a "don't lose the bookings answer" and I think they did lie to Don. Not much he can do about that.

Hopefully it all works out, but I'll recuse myself from further comment since I'm not staying there, and will be hard pressed to make any convention events anyway with my new job and new bills. :frown:

I will be back by there tomorrow to get a load of crap from my house, so I will take some pics of the hotel for everyone to see what the current status is.

Back in Michigan ... again.
FWIW, I had my wedding reception at this very hotel back in 1998. I didn't stay there, but the folks who did had nothing bad to report, and I thought the surroundings and food was quite good.

Granted, this was 9 years ago, but it was a very good experience none the less.

There's still a month to go, perhaps it will be in better condition come then. If not, we can all crash at Mandy's :p

Don: I'll have a final version of the cruise to you by Sunday, and I'll update you on the rest then. Sorry I haven't been too communicative lately, I'll do better here in crunch time for the convention :thumb:

Beth,
I've heard of table dancing, but table sleeping...?

Tell us more . . . !

Anyway, I think everyone recognizes that it's the Holiday that's responsible. In order for the renovation to have been completed by mid-June as promised, they would have had to start no later than early April. And considering they're just getting started, they've known for nearly two months they couldn't meet the convention date and keep their promise to Don. Heck, it wasn't until this morning that Holiday Inn's website was updated to reflect the "new" renovation completion date - it nows shows ".... See our new Holidome arly August2007." [sic]

Here's some food for thought - if we hadn't started asking questions, would they have even told Don until the last minute, when it would be too late to change?

THis is all very interesting.

Hi Tim. With you luck on trips up north you may arrive to find your room in a different state, and only half there at that! If I SHOw up at the convention would it be wise for me to wear a disguise?

Would you have a good silver drivers door for a 92 that you could bring?

This part is for anybody attenting from a "rust free" part of the country,,,,,since almost all the SHOs are suffering from rust up here, you may consider bringing along some rust free stuff.

May the posting begin.

Beth, IF ( and you know how lazy I am) I can arrange it, I'll try to donate some items unique to Toledo for an auction to benefit the SHOforum. Hmmm, maybe I better throw one in for the convention too.

Don is an expert at these things, and I have no doubt he'll get things figured out and any issues that need to be resolved will be. In the interim I'd ask that people not jump to any conclusions or otherwise stir the *** until Don has had a chance to investigate the situation and determine where things stand.

FWIW, while the negative reviews seem troubling, remember that most of the world isn't eBay with everyone being diligent about leaving positive and negative feedback. Check with your local BBB and you'll find that they receive about 99 complaints to every 1 compliment, and I suspect that the hotel reviews in question may be a comparable example. People with a complaint are far more likely to voice it than people with a compliment.

For the conventions I've attended, Don's hotel choices have always been top-notch. Even with the problems with the room card keys in Memphis, the overall experience for our event was no less enjoyable. And, you can't imagine the extent to which Don, Jan, and the rest of his family work to make sure we all have an enjoyable time. I'm not worried for a second, and have full trust in Don on this issue.

:squint: Oooooooh, you're going to pay for that one! :squint:

Screw it, I'll just ban you!
