I am writing this from memory, of what I recall reading on-online last week when I was planning on making a reservation.

This thread isn't based on "rumors", but on customer reviews posted to the Holiday Inn website. The fact that renovations that were suppose to be completed, are just being started has been confirmed by JoeSHO. I guess we should have arranged to stay at the Holiday Inn Express instead, that way we would have all been able to put on that white bathrobe and completely remember every exact detail of every review . . . .

:laugh_ti: :laugh_ti: :laugh_ti:

Of the reviews I read, those speaking of the various problems at the hotel start in November and continue with the last being posted in either March or May - again, this is from memory. This includes complaints about the "bug problem" throughout the hotel, noise problems at the hotel from non-hotel guests, and the general "I-don't-give-a-shit" attitude of the staff. "Who" owns the hotel is irrelevant – as the reviews suggests the staff providing the service appears to be one of the sources of problems. And for the repeated complaints to range over an extended period of time, suggests that "the owners" are not attune to "the staff" and other problems at this hotel.

The only positive comment, was a generic “nice hotel” comment from last summer.

My most recent conversations with Holiday Inn, is that the renovations are being conducted from 18 June through 18 August, and that the Holidome, pool, restaurant, lounge, etc. will be closed through at least 01 August. Online they currently show that 36 rooms are out-for-renovation - not "only a few rooms....".

First, the “free” breakfast is the standard amenity at Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express - as well as Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn, and numerous other hotel chains. For them to say, ".... well, we are offering a free continental breakfast blah, blah, blah,...." is disingenuous at best.

Second, the lack of a health fitness center I don't think is going to be a problem for most - except for maybe Mel - I'm sure he'd be complaining about the inability to get-in his daily reps of 12 oz. curls if he were going . . . . :laugh_ti:

... oh wait, that’s the lounge which also won’t be open . . . .

Third, part of the reason I choose to stay at a $100-a-night hotel are the amenities that come with the room – all of which will be unavailable until August 18th. Has the hotel offered to discount the rooms due to their inability to provide these services? No. Better yet, did they even inform anyone of the problem, or was it this thread that brought the problem to light once someone called? But they sure tried their damnedest (-2 sp) to get me to place a reservation today, despite others reporting the hotel is already overbooked....

Fourth, the lack of a pool and restaurant and lounge is a problem for some. Personally, I don't care to have to wait 30 minutes for "the bus" (shuttle van) each way to go take a 15 minute dip in the pool when free-time is already a limiting factor. That’s part of the point of paying more for a room per night – immediate access to amenities. And if it’s been a long day, I’ve been known to simply grab a quick meal and beer at the hotel and then grab some sleep – also neither of which will be an option.

Fifth, if we’re only going to be using the room to get 3-4 hours sleep per night and store our personal gear, why should any of use waste upwards of $100 per night? Especially when there are less expensive alternatives, with a full compliment of amenities right next door – including a banquet room?

Six, and what about the laundry facilities? I will have been on the road for a week collectively before the convention is over, and my helmet bag only holds 2 pair of jeans, a few shirts, and other ‘necessities’.

What I find truly most disturbing, is that they [Holiday Inn/Intercontinental Hotels] pulled the information from their website.

Storm Chaser. You have some good points. When I said a "few" it was because the hotel has over 180 rooms and only about 30 are being taken out of action at a time. They promised me that there are more than enough completed rooms to accomodate our group.

But I found the reviews some have mentioned, and while one disgruntled guest can make more noise than 100 happy ones, I am still concerned.

I will be making several calls tomorrow. I have contacts in the area and we may have to make some radical changes.

I am VERY disappointed that we weren't told of this till last week, and still they insist that it won't be a problem. I am coming to the conclusion that it might be.

I would ask that you hold your venom down to a roar. I won't take one or two bad reviews as gospel, and most everything else talked about IS rumor at this point. I am not in charge of the hotel and the renovation, I can only go on what I saw when we visited last fall (a nice hotel in good condition overall, frankly I didn't see the need for renovation) and what I was told by some others that visited (construction not a problem, maybe now it is?) I AM in charge of the convention and have been doing my best to put together a great event.

To say I am upset is not doing it justice. I won't sleep well tonight.

But I would ask that you and others hold on till I get a chance to do some more investigation into our options. Under the best of circumstances doing something like this isn't easy, and when tempers get fired up, it will only make things worse.

WOW! Extremely well said! You make a ton of valid and very important points, some of which we are trying to figure out what to do with also.

Don,
PLEASE don't take *any* of this personal. I've organized events like this before, and fully understand what a thankless job it can be. My problem has been with Holiday Inn, and how I've been blatantly lied to on more than one occasion in initially trying to place a reservation.

I learned long ago, that when problems surface, you have to go at it head-on as early as possible, otherwise they have a way of spiraling out-of-control. Given the distance and expense that many will go through to get to the zoo, the quickest way to **** interest for next year's convention, is if the prior year doesn't go well.

I can't tell you how bad I want to make this convention, having missed Indy (less than an hour from where I grew up, spending year after year at the Indy 500, US Nationals, and Street Machine Nationals) and Memphis (less than 2.5 hours from where I now live). I want to fly that F-14 simulator - this will be me  ! ! ! (I wonder what the roll-rate is on that thing....? aileron roll,... aileron roll,... aileron roll,...). I always wanted to do a 'real' carrier landing.

I'm not mad - it's just been my experience with Intercontinental Hotels that they've either gone extremely well, or atrociably bad. When all the dust settles, remind me to tell you about the scientific conference I attended during a Tropical Storm a few years back....

I looked on a few sites for other hotels in the area, and the Clarion, the one used most often by a big street rod event gets even worse basic reviews. Virtually every one in town had some bad comments, and I don't think every hotel in town does a bad job.

I DO think that the fact that the Holiday Inn is owned by the same folks that have a four star hotel downtown that gets really good reviews does count for something. They are upgrading the Holiday Inn a bunch, and I was promised without any doubt that the entire upgrade would be done in time for our event.

Now seems I haven't been kept up to date. I am not happy.

To change hotels at this late a date may be impossible. But I will see what can be done.

Tip for the future.....

Holiday Inns are good, especially the newer Express and Selects.

BUT....EVERY Holidome....and they are all 20-30 years old, have been a disappointment in EVERY one I've stayed at in the last 10-15 years. And high-speed internat works in NONE of them, which is why most make you go to the "business center" in the lobby.

IMNSHO they should all be torn down. They were a cute idea in the 70s, but they have not aged well, and walking a mile to my room is not something I enjoy.

the only problem I have with that Holiday Inn on 11th and I expressed it before was the Bowling ally in the parking lot... Tuesday's and thursday's that parking lot is really busy until late... I hadn't seen the reviews nor been in that hotel in a very long time. It seams like it has been there forever. Don I'll do whatever is needed, I'm still checking on the construction you asked about..
FYI I don't have anymore room for anyone myself....

Ron,
While Holidomes are old, Ken and I visited this one and it was pretty nice. I also don't like walking miles to a room, and that wasn't the case here.

I will be making a trip early next week to see myself and see what options we have. Seems everyone I need to talk to is out today, so it may be next week before I can get anything done.

Kickin SHO, if it isn't too much trouble, visit the hotel and let me know what you find. Maybe check with the Clarion and see what they have scheduled for that week. I don't want to move the event, but I am considering it.

I don't want to over react, and I see some of that, and I had some panic last night for sure. There is a large parking lot, and yes a bowling alley, but parking should not be a problem. The time we need it most is Tuesday early AM, and I don't think anyone is bowling then. The other hotels we visited weren't any better.

Don, I think you mean 98TRSHO, I live in Wisconsin.

I have read all of the posts in this link. I can see everyone's side, however, the fact (in my eyes) remains, the host hotel is not up to par for this type of event. We, as well as plenty of others, have families that attend this event. Our kids want a pool, a restaurant - close- is a must, and I know most of us buy our own booze for the parking lot and more but a lounge usually gets used also.

I refuse to pack up my child and have them board a van to go somewhere else to use a pool that we should have on site, not to mention it would be a total pain in the ****. If any member of the family is unhappy, bummed, or whatever it may be, it is an unhappy time for all in that family.

With construction going on, what kind of a car show do you think it will be? Neat, clean, no dust? I am glad I don't have to worry about those folks.

I will not keep going on and on, I don't think that this place should have been chosen with construction being so close to the dates of our event. Rarely is a construction project on time.

I am honest in saying that I am going to be having a really hard time waiting a week to find out what is going to happen. At this point I am starting to get thoughts about my refund money.

Just being honest.....

I think giving Don at least a couple of days to check it out would be appropriate before we hit the panic button.

I am planning on a trip up there early next week. I have calls in to the hotel and the CVB.

In my defense, I was assured beyond all doubt that the construction would be done a month before our event. Yes I was lied to, but hindsight is a great tool, and neither you or I would have had it many months ago.

I made the best decision for the best event with information available.

I will gladly give refunds, but the convention is about the cars and events off the site of the hotel. Our sleeping rooms should not be effected, they are supposed to have enough of the renovated rooms (that have gotten at least one rave review on the internet) for everyone in our group. The banquet should not be effected, the car show should not be effected. Yes, you may not be able to swim in the hotel, and if nothing else I will work for a reduction in cost to more realistically reflect what people are getting.

The renovation work, as I understand it is pretty much limited to inside at this time.

Also understand that MOST hotels in any given area cannot accomodate our group. Most don't have banquet facilities. I also look at easy access, safety, and very important are parking facilities. Based on the information available through our on-site visit, we made good decisions. I did not find out about the problems till THIS WEEK.

Everyone relax, give me time to see what is really happening and not have to rely on second hand reports and rumors.

Don, this is what I have after making a few calls....
Hawthorne is booked only on the 20th.. has the rest of the date's open....

Clarion has no pool either due to a pipe busting they will not be starting that until the begining of july

Best Western does not have enough rooms

Holday inn express only has 60+ rooms in the hotel and is booked anyway

baymont has no pool at all...

I know your gonna be here tomorrow but if you need anything else let me know. I have a full daycare tomorrow so there is no way I'm getting out but I can do what I can from work...

Hold off for now, I am talking with the hotel, asking them to find us other accomodations. Baring that, I will ask for a big discount on the room rate.

An alternative would be to offer rooms in another hotel for those that want to move, and we keep the main events at the Holiday Inn.

Kris, would you accept a room at another hotel in the area?

While I agree the bowling alley is not likely to be a problem during the day, I would have Mandy stop-in and contact the bowling alley manager. During college I was a mechanic in three different bowling alleys. Most run at least one or two AM leagues at 9AM and noon, 2-to-3 days a week, and kids leagues all day Saturday. The daytime adult leagues were tailored to college students, wives, and retirees. While bowling league memberships at the national level have been in decline over the last several decades, the upper-midwest has always been one of the strong-holds of bowling.

Hmmm..... So, does this bowling alley have a lounge . . . . :nut:

Kris, I don't think there's a need for that (cancelling). The Hawthorn Suites has all the amenities your family needs. You can stay at the Hawthorn and simply walk across the parking lot for the banquet. That way you have the best of both - amernities for the family, hanging in the lot, and ready access to the banquet . . . .

. . . oh, that's three things, isn't it!
