Well i bought my SHO about 4 months ago, has 150k on it been meanin to get the cams welded but since i spent all my money on the car, then two coils went out, the brakes all were metal on metal, the r/s wheel bearing went bad. Then r/s rear caliper went bad and had to be replaced. Then the CPK went out. Then the r/c tie-rod went bad. If my dad wasn't a Ford mechanic I'd have as much into the car as I spent on it.
now the CAM FAILED!
yep, the on front intake cam the sproket has walked about 1/16th of an inch. Distinctive scrathces on the cam. I am going to pull the cams and take them to a machine shop to either be pinned or welded. My question is I can pull everything without pulling the motor but with the sproket having walked

how do I re-time the sproket on the cam.

I see the markings on the sproket does that line up with the ****** on the end of the cam. I understand that these maybe easier to re-install with the motor dropped. Is there a link with some infom all i can find is shops that will do it. I don't have the money to pay some-one. I have a ford authorized mechanic, and a machinist that can pin or weld them. But how do I get the sproket in the corect spot to be pined sinc eit has already walked?

I'm not 100% up on the cam failure details, but as far as I know if the cam has already failed it can't be repaired and needs to be replaced.
Also, www.v8sho.com has a lot of cam failure info.

I've been throughj their site, after a few hours of rummaging through what i must say is one of the poorest designed sites i've been too, and not finding anything I figured I would post here. I ts great I borrowed the money for the car so I still owe on it, and the thing is the worse car I have ever had. The last owner abuse dit to no end. It still had factory plugs and air cleaner and eveything else on it. Its been a money pit it spends more time in the shop then on the road.

If i can't just weld the sproket back up in place then it'll just rot way in my driveway for a while. I really don't have the money for cams. Its would still start and run felt like it was firing on 4 cylinders thats why i tore it oen to find the sproket had walked.

If I can't fix it I guess i'll just buy the cam replacement for the bad ones get it running and let some other sap deal with it. I gotta say Ford screwed up this one real good.

Sounds like it already spun and bent 8 valves, plan on at least pulling the head, replacing the bad cam, rebuilding the head, pray no pistons are cracked, etc.

Might want to get in touch with Eric Lehman who is in IL, his contact info is on the V8SHO site.

Or, you might just want to sell it as-is on eBay, probably get $600-$1200 depending on the condition of the rest of the car.

He's about 6 hours away, and I'm flat broke. In the middle of changing jobs when this happened. I still owe 2 grand on the car. The L/s door is smashe din cause some guy though h'd be cool. Not sure what happened came oput of a pary and the whole door was kicked in, and a bad motor now cars worthless. Just gonna sit in my driveway wi my other projects for a couple years. I'm leaving for New Orleans Monday 2-3 months. Most likely be re-activated and go to Iraq again after that so if I don't get something straightened out soon I fear it will never get fixed.

Not really that hard. By the way, you might notice on the top of the V8SHO site a Google search function. Typed in "Cam sprocket timing" and came up with the following link. Even has pictures! Cam Sprocket Timing
By the way, I have removed the heads in the car, but I sure the **** would not want to try to put them back on in the car. Took me less time to get the whole engine and tranny out then it did to remove just one of the heads in the car. You are probably looking at tossing a few valves out, replace them along with the head gasket and lower intake gasket and slap it back together. Shouldn't run you more then $1,500 in parts including the cam. I would strongly recommend getting them all welded shortly thereafter since you might note several lucky individuals had multiple failures on one engine just a few months apart. Also another handy picture is:
TCHAIN
For when you get ready to put it all back together.
I would also highly recommend you submit the information to Larry at the link to the webmaster so he can add it to his list of failures if you have not already.
Side not is that Eric is currently incapacitated do to totalling his 46,000 mile Garage Queen last week so he is out of the picture for this project.

well i redone mine in feb of this year spun cam, and mine had a told of 8 bent valves in the front head and 4 bent on the back head and the only cam to fail was the front intake, when i re timed mine i was low on money and took some art and craft supplies for wal mart and protractor and made me a set of degree dials and used some fishing line and weights to get a striaght 90 deg up and down with the ground, i got all of them in line then found my marks on the chain there are sometimes hard to see. and be hold all the marks was in line perfect and then i finished the reinstall. runs great.

Just had my cams welded. Mine had the same markings and after removing the cam I could slide the CAM sprocket back and forth down the cam. Just cause the sprocket walked a little on the cam doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the rest of the motor.

Yes the timing dimple on the sprocket lines up with the timing mark/dimple on the end of the cam.

You can blow compressed air into each cylinder (threw spark plug hole) to determine if any valves are bent. If they are bent then you will have severe blow by through the affected intake/exhaust valve.

Did you get this failure listed with [email protected] ? Go to V8SHO,com and register if you are not.
Your failure # should be somewhere in the low 600's. It's important to us all to keep as good of an accounting of these failures as we can.
Thanks
