On my 98 the ABS used to work fine until now. The ABS would quit working once it's used once. Sometimes it'll randomly work again then quit, but if you shut the car off and restart it, it will work one time then it won't work again. What seems to be broken? Cost to fix? Thanks for your reply.

The ABS controller is going out. A used one is the best bet. Total PITA to change.

The part is SHO specific. And new are very expensive. You can use any SHO one but avoid the '98 part.

OK paul since were going there with the ABS again I just want to ask if a ABS computer swap will stop my Speedo from dropping out when it's wet outside, Tim told me he heard from you that I needed to swap out my 98 ABS computer with a 99. How is that done, how much does it cost and are you sure that will fix this problem. I'm not driving it right now but Tim is, we stripped the crappy e-bay gauges off cuz that was why the needles were getting stuck but other then that it still drops out every now and again at a non set speed....

The speedo signal does come from the ABS module. Will it fix yours? I don't know.

You swap out the modules by disconnecting the wire connector, disconnecting the brake lines and the remove the module and pump from the car. If the two MC brake lines are bent up when they are loosened from the pump they should not get any air in them. The module uses solenoids to keep the valves closed so no air gets into it either. Will it fix your problem? I don't know.

the 98 ABS computer's are bad, it's only in the 98's though so a 99 swap from what I understand should fix the problem, why Mine only doesnt it when the ground is really wet is a good question, but while traveling acrossed NE a year or so ago the speedo dropped out, I was not collecting any miles for about 300 miles and had no tac I'll look into swapping them Paul and contact you if I have any problems :)

This is overstated. It is strongly suspected that the speedo drop out problem that occurs on most '98 models at over about 105 mph is caused by the ABS computer. Otherwise, it works just fine. At 105 mph anywhere but the track, you do not need to see the speedo anyway, you need to slow down. And on the track, you do not need to look at the speedo anyway, sone one else is taking you speed for you. Bascially, this is not a problem of any concern, so if you have a '98, you do not need a new ABS computer just because of its year of manufacture.

I wasn't saying it was something that all us 98 owner's needed to do, but if you have the problem that's the way to fix it. Mine doesn't drop out at 105 and above, mine will drop out at 50 if feels so inclined. It's all in the moisture in the air, if's its raining I know if I get on the highway and go the speed limit I will loose my speedo. Yes this does happen for my ex-husband who I'm sure drive's it much faster then needed but it also happens to me who has never had it over 95...

I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that the '98 speedo problem is not with the ABS unit itself. On the Gen 4 SHO project we used a complete '98 drivetrain including the '98 ABS computer and pump, and the speedo works fine up to 150mph.

I need to conduct an experiment on an otherwise stock '98 that exhibits the speedo problem to see if I can correct it, but if I'm right it will be a very simple fix. Fortunately our little project brought a new light to little issues like this, so despite the claim of some that it was "sleazy" to use a '98 drivetrain in the '02, it may have enabled us to finally solve a problem that to date has been un-fixable.

I will certainly be most interested to hear of and install the fix, Chris, though I am not sure I will ever see the results on the dash. I have not had the car at the track in many years. :)

ABS light on our 98 goes on and off like the check engine light on a Gen 2 SHO with bad 02 sensors.

So far its traced to a bad abs computer? Prices for new are expensive. Used ones too.
