I cannot find a CKS. Anyone know where to find one?

Ah you are correct, my bad.

Yeah I would just like to replace it. Car jumped time so while I'm in there I figured I'd just do what everyone reccommends.

I bought the car knowing it needed some work but in the short time I've owned it I've discovered it usually ain't as simple as "I'll run up to advance and get one." Initially the tensioner pulley bearing was screaming. No one in town could get it so I made a new pulley to accomadate an average tensioner bearing. Just tonight I went to pick up a crank seal and was told they couldn't get that either but to be fair I haven't been everywhere for that yet. Parts availability for this thing is making me nervous.
Did you get a code for crank sensor? Do you know the history of the car or when the water pump or crank sensor was last replaced?

Front crank seals are on the Shosource website.

Can anyone explain how this pick-up fails (besides the usual of getting soaked or contacting the shutter wheel).

My experience is that getting soaked is not the primary issue for failure. The issue is that eventually electronic parts fail, and heat typically speeds that death. Since the sensor is attached to the engine block, it gets heat cycled regularly, and eventually it quits working.

No code, yet.
I'm the third owner, car was purchased in charlotte and never left the piedmont here in NC. Guy I got it from said everything had been replaced within the past year. He showed me a bunch of receipts which don't mean anything to me.

I'm in the process of changing the timing belt, tensioner, front seal, oil pan seals(leaking), valve cover gaskets(back one leaking), cam sensor, and water pump. That way I know its actually been done. He had reciepts for all that stuff getting fixed or replaced and then some, including a crank sensor.

Yeah Shosource is pretty nice and I will be purchasing from them but I'm just in the habit of looking locally first.

Is there such a thing as a datasheet on the original CKS? I poked around a bit this morning but couldn't find anything in any of my service manuals. I find myself wondering if we couldn't use something like the MLX90254 sensor with a custom epoxy housing / mount.

This is something I am hoping can be discovered without having to run an aftermarket ignition system (MSD, MoTec, etc). Way outside my expertise but hopefully not everyone's around here. Or we could try and beg for a small run from one of the mfg's. Not sure we can come up with enough members interested to pull that off.

Is there a magnet involved? Somehow it senses the shutter wheel with spaces and solid sections. And signals to the distributer system either the solid tang or the space as it rotates by the sensor.

If I understand this correctly, this signal is checked by the cam position sensor.

My question is, can it be arranged so that the cam sensor runs the whole thing; with no check from the crank sensor?

On another note, is it possible that crank sensors last longer in northern USA and Canada, as my crank sensor has 200 K miles and counting. But lately, it has been a winter vehicle, so the electrical side of it would not get too hot, at least in the last 10 years.

Firebat is trying to develop a set up where the engine only uses the cam sensor.

Are you running the original crank sensor at 200K miles?

I could look around my garage, I used to have a box full I bought off eBay some time ago. PC-17 odd that they are not a stock item any longer. . .

I put the same order in about 6 weeks ago, it said it could take 1 to 3 months to ship. Hope they have them somewhere.

That is some expensive little do-dad. I am missing how it could be priced like that.
If that is the price you have to pay to move away from a distributor, then give me a distributor !

I sure hope this situation changes. I am probably due for a few of these.

Our Suzuki has the cam sensor controlling the engine and the crank sensor (on the flywheel) doing the checking. When the crank sensor failed, it did nothing more than throw the engine light. That big flywheel diameter yields a lot more accuracy that the puny shutter wheel we have.

Help!

Has anyone approached the manufactures to make more? This shocks and scares me....having 3 SHO's.

There is a good explanation of the DIS and the CPS operation in the SHO Engine Book. It is a hall effect device, which is the most common type. I don't have a SHO motor to experiment with fit, but it makes me wonder if another part number could be adapted. For example, in physical appearance, a SMP PC170 is similar. Harness swap would be easy if the mount and correct gap can be achieved, and voltages same. Just a thought.

Is there a way to test used, uninstalled crank sensors to see if they're still good?
