You guys need a couple of catch cans to capture that crap before it enters the intake.

One on the valve cover side (atmospheric)

Pass side can

and one on the intake side (vacuum).

Drivers side can

I would surmise that in a regularly injected car, the fuel, being highly energetic, acts as a detergent and cleans the valve stems/valves as it passes them. In a DI motor there is no gasoline to thin out and clean out the varnish that builds up from PCV systems, etc.

This is typically the case. And interesting enough, at the EcoBoost engine presentation, by the chief engineer of EcoBoost, at the convention lunch at Ford World Headquarters, someone (Paul, was that you?) asked how the EcoBoost keeps it's vlaves clean with DI. His answer was that it uses an HD PCV filter and seperator that pretty much eliminates all oil going into the intake and the valves stay nice and clean.

This was also covered in a post about a year and a half ago when SHOZ123 quizzed Ford about the same thing: http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?t=96574

Back on topic though, I'm surprised running it on regular would **** the plugs. I know they did lots of hard testing on the motor with high and low octane (87). It's supposed to be able to handle 87 no problem, just with a small loss in performance. That's pretty crazy, but at least Ford is covering it. I'm sure that motor is on it's way here right now and they're going to tear that thing to pieces trying to figure out exactly what happened and why.

I run a catch-can on both of my Pontiac G8 GT's. It's amazing how much oil would otherwise end up in intake and they are not direct injected engines. Would like to do a catch-can on EB & e-mailed Billet Specialties about one, but haven't heard back. Or... has Ford already solved this issue???

There's nothing different about the amount of oil that collects in the intake tract on a DI engine, it's just that it sticks to the intake valve and port and is never washed off by fuel in a DI engine. So I would expect the same amount of oil to collect in your Pontiacs' catch cans as any other car, with or without DI.

Whereas the mesh trap that Ford uses to keep the oil out of the intake may catch liquid oil, what you really need to be worried about is the evaporated hydrocarbon/water mix gases that come from blowby.

This stuff is very thin viscosity wise and is not "oil" as you would recognize. The can I made was self draining when there was no engine vacuum. Here's a picture of the goo that froze in the winter.

Well, here is the update...

I am being told that the root of my problem has come from a spark plug....
The tip of the plug broke/or melted?...which then caused massive damage to the piston/cylinder/head.

Ford will being doing a long block replacement. They will be sending a new 2011 motor off the Assembly line by end of the week. I am told i will have the car back a week or less after they receive the new engine.

It was also recommended that i use premium grade fuel until new plugs come out..?

That's all i know.... Do i get my odometer set at 0 for new motor? :)

post number 30 , but no one cared.

For your last question , no.

Sorry for all the V6 content, but I am a V6 guy.

Anyway, catch cans are a good idea on any car, especially the V6 that doesn't really have a functioning PCV system to begin with!

This one shows where and how the catch can is mounted on my wife's car (yeah, the cruise control is gone and this takes its place)

And this one shows what would be collecting on the inside of your intake.

Poopy!

On topic content: The Yamaha V6 is not really any different than the TT V6 in that this shit will get into your intake. And it is nasty, as previous pictures have shown. The catchcan I bought was maybe like $35 or $40. No, it doesn't do some of the fancy stuff others do, but as you can see it works just fine in collecting stuff.

Thats very interesting, some may know some may not but I started a thread http://www.shoforum.com/showthread.php?p=1193646#post1193646

where my sho had three craked plugs with one of the tips completely melted away, I only use 91 here in Vegas cause of the 110+ temps.. I also had a thread where I was asking what plugs to use for a 6k tune up and I got flamed for even mentioning it.

Looks like changing the plugs early and often may be the best inssurance to keep this from happening...

I recall all of your posts/threads about the car from the get go. The only reason you were "flamed" because of 6K spark plug changes are nearly unheard of. Even on the older SHOs, the maintenance level was way up there for a plug change. 100K on the V-8s IIRC. But, you were on to something. You had a hunch, thought something was wrong, and told everyone about it. You did your part and then everyone else took it from there. I can only hope like **** that a spark plug change is NOT needed so early on in the SHOs life.

From a buyers perspective, ones now and future ones, the bad points in buying a new car will outlast the good points if they are new to the SHO world. Us older SHO owners will "accept" an issue and still love the car. Hopefully.;) But the first time 2010 SHO buyer will not appreciate doing this kind of maintenance to a car that costs over $40,000. They may look elsewhere if this problem becomes an ongoing thing. And I'm gonna go check my plugs when my car cools down. I still have a rough idle at start up with 7400 miles and one oil change already.

Like anything new parts break and get messed up from the factory.. QC cant catch everything..

Knowing the testing that these engines have gone through, Im 100% sure that this is 1 isolated incident... I bet i do know what caused it, but wont flip the torch on about it either..

People should not really worry about this stuff yet.. Also Im sure my inside freinds would have me pull mine just for the heck of it..
