okay...I am scared for my baby. It as been running great and it still is..but...OKAY,here is the story. I was in the drive-through line @ burger king when I noticed a fairly loud knocking sound. I paid no attention to it really and drove over to my friends house. I stayed for about 2 hours and left. When I started the car there was no problem. I left and as I drove down the road i heard the noise again (a little louder). Anyway...I drove home and when I pulled into the garage the sound was VERY VERY VERY LOUD!!!!

that is the deal, my LOVED yamaha engine is making a very very loud pinging/knocking noise. Sounds like hammer hitting the engine. HOWEVER, THE ENGINE IS RUNNGING PERFECTLY!! shrug whatever it is, it does not affect the way the car drives. the noise is very loud...rod bearings?

Please help as soon as possible.

I suspect a very serious loss of oil pressure. I can't think of anything else that would explain how the sound disappeared after the car cooled down. Get an oil pressure gauge on there ($7 walmart special is just fine. Don't need to stick it in the dash, just hang it on there loose to get a quick and dirty reading). If there's an oil pressure problem you'll probably want to drop the pan and inspect things. First the inlet screen and pickup tube to engine gasket to see if there's leaks and also check the rod bearings and the mains. You may as well replace the rod bearings while you're in there.

Actually, one of the quickest things you can do is remove the oil filter and cut it open to check for copper bearing bits. Just make sure to get another filter on there before you do any oil pressure tests.

I had a similiar sound coming from the top of my engine. It turned out to be the cam chain on the front head was slack. Hopefully you've got the same problem as mine was easy to fix.

yes, it does sound similar to a "chain"...i 4got to mention that. If this is the problem, how much do you think this would be to get fixed?

It seems like there are several possibilities for that. I might add another to the list. A while back I started my car and heard what I thought was knocking, the engine was making rhythmic shuddering noises, and the rpms were bouncing from 500-1,000. It looked like it was struggling not to stall. I found out later from SdPatt it was some check valve in the fuel pump that was allowing air bubbles in the fuel line I guess. It started normally 10 minutes later, and I can hear bubbling coming from the gas tank every now and again, when I first turn the key. Hope this sheds any light or rules anything out.

Did it need a new fuel pump?

My guess would be rod bearings. I had one that was cracked in half. I bet you did too and spun it.

I might not have worded that well, I dont think its the fuel pump itself, I had the fuel pump replaced a few years ago. From what I know its a check valve relatively close to the fuel pump, and I just haven't gotten around to replacing it. Because the problem hasn't really reoccurred, and due to the complexity of dropping the gas tank.

okay...once again I have NO loss in power. I have not driven the car since I got home with it. I do not want to damage anything further. How much would it cost to fix a rod bearing? Could this possibly cause damage if I drive it again?

Thax for all the help guys frown

First, don't drive the car. You risk something getting much worse. If you run it to test for something someone suggests, try do multiple tests at once if possible, to avoid having to run it more than needed.

As for the bearings, they're about $60 at Napa. Hopefully someone will provide more details. If you'd like to get some details on that, try www.kurtmetros.com[/img], and look ...on here, but it might not be that. Good luck!

how much can I expect to pay if the problem is the bearings. I know th bearings themselves cost 40-60, but how much should I expect for parts and labor...(jus incase)

Although it appears to be intimidating, with all the info available and the limited tools needed it is a rather easy DIY project finish-able in an afternoon. Only real special tool needed is a torque wrench. Get a new pan gasket and an extra tube of black silicone. Total parts are less than $100.00

If you took it to a mechanic they would probably charge you 5 to 6 hours labor if not more.

I would love to do it myself...but I am only 17 and rather ignorant when it comes to the engine. Also, I'm afraid that I'd F sumthin up. But, it may be better than paying 500 bucks for the job to be done.

buy an hayes manual for your SHO and tackle the rod bearings. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have the proper tools im sure its not very complicated, besides those hayes manuals can make a world of difference. Why waste $500(or whatever the going rate is for rod bearings) when you can do it yourself?

good luck

IMHO: I've had the pleasure of having an oil pressure failure and a rod bearing failur and here's what I found out:

Oil pressure failure: was due to a failed oil pan gasket which got sucked up into the oil sump. The car usually took a few minutes to start knocking because the debris took that long to be ingested into the sump screen. It cost me the price of a gasket and my time to fix.

Rod failur: Knocked from the word go and got progressively worse as the engine heated up.

My bet is on the oil pressure problem.

GOOD LUCK!

the knocking starts AS SOON as I start the car. It is VERY loud. I tried to start it and lift the hood to "find" the area, but I couldnt take the noise. shrug

I am off from school all this week, so this morning I went out to start the car and see how it sounded. The car took some effort to start. After it was started I force myself to go under the hood and listen to it. I didnt want to damage WHATEVER it is further, so I hurried. After listening, I really think that it could possiby be the cam chain that Jbeano mentioned. It sounds like a chain of some sort. How would I check thi out? Take off the intake? where exactly are the cam chains? I really have NO idea, but I dont have any money and I have an entire week. My mom would pay to get it fixed, but i wanna do it myself and save some doe. Respond ASAP, thank you guys.
