Will a air conditioning compressor off a 93 work on my 91?

I read in a previous post that all ac compressors from 89=94 are the same... would a 93(out of an auto) work on my 91(5-speed duh wink ) connectors and all? I've got one off a parts vehicle that the receipt shows it is less than a year old so if that's the case woo hoo my 91 is getting that one when the 3.2 is swapped in... along with r134 thumbs_u

You have to change over alot more than just the compressor to go from R-12 to 134A. I forgot what all needs to be changed but it's expencive. Plus I think the R-12 is much colder.

To switch from R12 to R134, you need to flush out the system very well. The refrigerant oil between the two gases is not compatible. You also need to replace all O-rings in the system (I believe there are only 4, 2 for each line). Do your homework and you should manage just fine. As far as the compressors being the same......no idea. Do they look identical?

All 89-94 SHOs use the same compressor, NipponDenso 10P15F.

R134 will work just fine as long as you follow all the rules.

R12 is NOT "colder". However, it is a more efficient refrigerant and a system that was designed for use with R-12 will not, unless properly upgraded and modified, always perform as well as the original once converted to R134. This holds true especially for those who use the $30 conversion kits from WalMart.

You guys are great thumbs_u Post @ 2 AM and have multiple answers when I wake up. As for the r134 conversion don't worry I'll be doing my homework and using the search feature, but what is the "right" way to do it? No $49 conversion kits from Wal-mart? shrug

ACV1081,

Your "new" compressor from the 94 was part of an R-134a system, so it has R-134a oil in it. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CLEANING OUT THE COMPRESSOR. Simply let it drain any oil left in it.

Next, before you install the engine it would be a good time to remove the A/C lines from the firewall. Get a flushing kit from an auto parts store for flushing out R-12 systems for R-134a conversion. Flush out the evaporator core at the firewall outlets following the kit instructions.

Then flush out the condenser core that is on front of the radiator. Replace the filter dryer and its attached lines. If the filter dryer in your 94 "parts car" was replaced with the compressor it should be usable. The same should be true for the line with the orafice.

The alternative would be to replace both lines with new ones. I would pull out the condenser core and have it pressure tested at a radiator shop before cleaning it.

You will add a total of 7.5 to 8 ounces of R-134a oil made for conversion. Put about 5 ounces in the compressor and the rest devided between the condensor and the filter dryer.

Get an "O" ring kit that has the oil, "O" rings, and springs for the connections, including the "O" rings for the compressor connections.

The rest is easy, vacuum and charge. rangerj

Dang this is strange, A/C questions in the middle of winter!

it was to my knowledge that on the Gen 1s, there were 2 diff A/C compressors. the 10P15F and the FS10 (not sure on model name). the SHOs built from 89 to 5/91 had the FS10, and thereafter the 10P15F was used. this was the information i acquired from the forum when i was looking to overhaul my A/C system.

Dale,

Yeah, that is my understanding also. However, the mounting bracket is the same, that is the holes are in the same place so that the Nipondennso bolts right up. That is my understanding.

This issue should not be a problem, but I do not have personal experience with it. Does anyone out there with said experience know of any problems here? rangerj

The FS10 was used on the SLO. The SHO never used it.

I've been looking into AC stuff too and the only thing they asked me is if it was a factory installed unit or a dealer installed unit. They seemed to know everything else, at autozone.
