The thrust bearings have confused me.

Do I

A: Install old thrust bearings since they seem to have very little wear.

B: Install new thrust bearings. Problem is I don't know where to get them.

C: Leave them out all together.

I don't think it is option C.

I don't remember which way they went in.
Grooved side in or grooved side out?

I got my new thrust bearings from SHONUT with the main bearing package. I replaced mine in my rebuild. The machine shop said they weren't worn too bad at 168k, but we put new ones in of course.

It says on his site that he doesn't sell those bearings anymore. The engine I have the bearings from had 54k miles on it. I will take pictures of them.

To be honest I've hardly heard of thrust bearing being worn out. Even when I've worked on taxi's with 400 thousand miles they still look usable.

thrust bearings can be obtained easily enough with the main bearing kit from rockauto.com, autozone.com, ebay, probably RCM.

Main bearing kit is like 60 or 70 bucks if I remember. 4 main bearings and the 4 thrust bearings. They wear and they should be replaced if you are in there doing the mains, why not do it all.

Clevite 77 bearings do not come with thrust bearings from any vender I could find. Only Hi-tech bearings do.

If I can find thrust bearings alone I will get them but that seems hard to do.

Use the old bearings. You will find the main bearings(all) need no maintainence. The thrust bearings I received would'nt fit the gap.

And in answer to your question: The grooves go toward the rotating parts, which is the crank. The oil comes out of the hole in the crank, squeezes through the space between the main bearing insert and the journal, then it squeezes through the grooves in the thrust washer. Since the crank is rubbing against these grooves, a nice layer of oil escapes and keeps the crank keeps the crank centered and slippery, right in the middle.

There is a limit to the acceptable wear that you can have. I don't have those specs at hand but I've never seen a set with any bad wear on them.
