I tried to start my sho (1993 5-speed) today to move it into the garage, and it started fine but as soon as the idle went up it quit. It quit a split second after I started it. So i tried to crank it again, and you can hear the starter, but the engine won't start. A lot of white smoke came out of the tail pipes. My dad is checking the timing right now. Does anyone know what it might be or does anyone have a diagram that they can send me of the Timing??? Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you need more info just let me know, i'm kind of out it right now.

Kasey,
I would suggest going to shophoenixproject.com and looking at the timing marks for the belt there.....

Also, if you have had your car sitting for a while or done any maintenance, there might be some gasoline/carb cleaner plugging up the runners not causing it to fire.

Also, if the car dies after you start it, the IAB (idle air bypass) that is located on the intake behind the throttle body might need cleaning....

Good luck. :thumb:

What kind of smoke is it? If it is from excess fuel, floor the throttle when you try and start it.

Oh yeah, and make sure your fuel pump is priming and check the pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rails..
fuel pump is priming, and there is pressure. I believe the timing jumped, the timing marks aren't lined up. When I try to start it, it just spins freely. It doesn't catch at all. We just pushed it into the garage so we'll find out more once we jack it up and take all that off.

Might be a broken or stripped timing belt.

Take the oil cap off and try cranking the engine. If you cant see any movement, then the cam isn't spinning, and you'll know it's probably the belt.

I saw the belt yesterday and it didn't look stripped or broken.

As Dale said, the white timing marks will not line up on the belt vs pulleys once the engine is rotated. You need to set the crank to TDC (the timing mark on the damper should match up with the "0" degree mark on the lower timing cover) and check to see that the two cam pulley timing marks are both at the 12 o'clock (straight up) position.

the crank is set at zero and none of the marks are where they should be. I'll take some pics as soon as I can.

as i said above, if you install the belt with the marks on the belt lined up with the marks on the pulleys, then when you rotate the crankshaft to set the timing tensioner, your marks will not line up again.
