Just normally driving home today and started hearing a weird rattle. One i wasnt used to hearing. Intake and exhaust already rattles. Started smelling gear oil. Pulled over and popped the hood. Checked the transmission and it was still full and red. Smelled alot of gear oil with hood open towards the rear of the engine. Looked under the car and it was dripping above where the cats should be. Backed it up and sludgy green black gear oil. Not sure if axel went or ptu split. Im pushing more power than most into it. Ill look at it more in the morning. No whine or anyway. Just normally driving in D mode. But im sure it had enough of my S mode crap over the years.

Other than that it drives fine but i wasnt pushing it, was trying to get home. No ce lights or messages.

She gone!

Not to sure. I did fall off the road for a second last week on the passenger side. Truck wouldnt move over on a tight mountain road. Hit the white line and bang bang. So im hoping its the seal on the axel. But it could be anything. Drives fine. Just has a rattle and smells like gear oil. No power loss ever. I think if the ptu would of blew the car wouldnt move to great. But ive never read much on the ptu. I know its gears. Usually when gears misalign all shit break loose

I can say shit but not tran ny lol

Its the miserable cold time of the year. So ill look at it when i can. After doing some reading my bet is it just failed and forced the fluid out. May be the whine/rattle that i hear that usually comes along with it. Looked like the install isnt bad. I can find one for 950$ on tasca. May just replace it myself. Car somehow dosnt have rust even though its been in the rust belt for years. Hope it goes well. Ill just order a new ptu and replace it. 115k miles on it. New one i think has a drain plug as i have read.
Being without cats may of given me more time before this happened on a positive.

When i do remove the ptu. Ill have it for free pickup or pay the shipping. If someone wants to rebuild it or something. Was only driven gently about 15 miles from when i first smelled the gear oil going onto the exhaust.
If its a couple weeks and no takers it will be taken to the scrap yard

I will not post it on here officially as it is against my personal values to pay to post any of my 90’ or 15’ sho parts that i give away for free. Knowing the scarcity of most the parts i have available. A scarce platform should be fully open for part swaps and used part sales.

Are you sure it's the PTU? Most people say the smell is awful when they let go or leak. I hope it's something you can easily repair.

It is awful. Gear oil smell. Outside of the car and inside. I know the smell of gear oil. Its my least favorite oil to get on my clothes because the smell takes longer to go away.
Was working on another car of mine today to use as a backup for now. Ill look at the sho closer soon. I did look for a minute today at the axel where it goes into the ptu and the white seal cover was still there and not leaking around it. But the exhaust is covered in oil under it. Still thinking it pushed the fluid out the top vent.
Snow tonite and tomorrow so hopefully i can get a better look at it over the weekend on wheel ramps.

Some people state the smell of propane and other weird smells but i think its people who dont know how the different oils in a car smell and….taste lol.
Ive been wrenching on cars nearly my whole life so im familiar with the flavors.

Just today i did a tune up to my one older 70s car to daily for a little while. Just as i did spark plugs and wires i noticed there was a little puddle on the ground. It was leaking gas at the mechanical fuel pump. Good thing it was just the 50 year old hose. But when i see gear oil or gasoline leak. Im calm because they aint major and easy fixes most of the time. Now if gas is spraying on top of the engine, danger!

Best thing to do is just replace the ptu. If it was a diff i would look into it a little more and wouldnt replace it as it would either be the cover gasket or input/output seal.

Unless you're able to easily get the rear cat unbolted from the turbo, don't waste your time trying to wrestle the PTU out with the subframe in place. I tried (about 3 weeks ago) and finally opted to just drop the subframe. I wish I had come to that decision several days sooner, it was relatively little work and ALMOST made the PTU swap easy. At that point, the most difficult part was drilling out the bolt that broke in the exhaust flex pipe. Also, order the seal protector when you order the PTU from Tasca. It's to protect the seal when installing the passenger side half shaft into the PTU and will hopefully prevent that seal from leaking soon.

I ordered the updated PTU from Tasca and it did NOT have a drain plug. My MKS does not have the external oil cooler though so if you have the PP maybe your updated PTU will be different.

I dont have cats
A friend of mine did his recently on the ground and said drop the exhaust. Pull the axle and unbolt the rear subframe to allow it to drop the rear. Not to sure if its something ill do myself or not. On the lift yesterday it looked pretty buried in there.
Thats weird i thought the updated ptu had a drain plug. That will suck if it dont. I really dont see the point in the pp one with a cooler. Just running amsoil in there or redline will be better. I dont have a cooler on mine and i never had it really overheat. Maybe just the message about it being fwd only mode but i just restart the car and it goes away on hard track driving

On my non zoomed in picture you can see my pretty cats.
The kid who got my car up on the lift. I asked him how my cats looked. And he just starred at them and said the cat thieves must be getting better that they replace the cats with pipes so people dont notice they stole them. Lol

Up by the red lettering you can see a crack entirely across also. Broke her good. I went under it today to put silicone on the bottom crack so it can hold some oil while sitting in the garage. In case i need to move it and noticed it today. Hard to get light and camera in there

Check your intermediate CV shaft bearing support and the bearing. Anything that transmitted enough Force to crack the case might have done some damage to other components in the Driveline. Better safe than sorry.

Actually started to smell that propane smell today. Yea i started driving it short distances. I drove it with a blown engine, i drove it with a blown ptu. I dont plan on driving it anymore now. I plan on replacing the ptu myself but now im thinking to just have my raceshop do the work for me so everything can be looked at better. Also you can see some red drips on the bottom of the ptu. Oil was black that came out. I put normal gear oil in it. Thinking thats atf leaking into the ptu now. So the inner seal at the 6f55 probably went also.
Havent heard any noises from it since it happened. I dont know how it didnt llock up yet but im not pushing my luck. It will sit for now. Winter time anyway. Keep it safe mechanically and cosmetically

Drives straight and dosnt have any pull. Ive read about it pulling to the right or left when the ptu goes. Maybe mine didnt “go” yet. Lol

Finally got around to taking the ptu apart. I was pretty shocked by my findings. It did sit outside of my garage for alittle bit. Then i moved it inside my garage a little ago. So it was nice out today so i pryed it apart.

This will be a ton of pictures probably, i can put it back together and sell it for 100$ as gently used if anyone want it. Lol jk, but i will keep the bolts. Rest will go to the junk yard.

All i did was replace it and let it sit. Everything is what the car did to it
