I ordered my rod bearings today and the guy at NAPA said that he is only showing 32 bearings (minus the 6 I just bought) in the country and there at Clevites warehouse. Should we worry? Is this a sign that rod bearings are about to become expensive?

ummm scary. I get so worried sometimes...I have spent $5K on my baby in the last 2 years. One day the oil pump could go and ive just lost a huge investment. I hope we quickly find a new source of rod bearings (and valve shims for that matter).

Exactly. With Clevite, they're a large enough company (huge parents actually).

I just took a look at what I had over the next two months (including my 95 ATX coming up on 100k soon - the point where I wanted to do my own bearings), and figured now's a good of a time as any.

We were talking about rod bearings. thumb And yes, you can use motor cycle shims.

And someone mentioned finding a new source of valve shims in this thread, which is what he was answering. wink

And yes, 29mm Kawasaki / whomever shims do work and are an established replacement. They are not cheaper however. Scott Patterson will be posting shortly about the cheapest places to find them. :)

FYI (not to hijack the thread)...
I took an hour yesterday to sort my used shims, and I'm guessing I've got about 1,000 of them now. Going to be considering selling them.

hee hee, and I just decreased the national supply by 6 (sets) myself.

Ordered mine last Wednesday. They should be in sometime this week.

As Fred said, I wouldn't worry. Clevite is a large company and I doubt that production for our rod bearings will be ending any time soon.
