The new engine is running hot... its been in the O and N in "NORMAL" Its full of 50/50 mix. Is it the thermostat that would be causing this problem? The outside temp has been in the 50's so thats not a factor.

Let the engine warm up a bit and give the top radiator hose a few squeezes to "burp" it. It sounds like you still have lots of air in the cooling system.

Between the "N" and "O" of NORMAL? Thats not hot. Thats where the 180 t-stat runs.

Matt did you change the sending unit from the old engine to the new engine? That may be the problem. Every sending unit differs a bit. That gauge is absolutely useless if you ask me. Get an electrical gauge and set yourself up an A pillar pod. It's the best mod I've done, just because I feel like I know whats going on.

Also, take the top off of the radiator, turn on the engine, turn the heat on full blast, and let the car get up to operating temperature. Once air bubbles stop coming out of the radiator fill hole all the air is out. That will rule out that possibility.

There is no air in there anymore, I am certain of that. I must have the 180 in there.. I dont like it running that hot, I am replacing the T-stat today.

180 is fine... That's just where the thermostat opens. If you try running it any cooler you will go into open loop mode and your car won't run right, you'll run rich and end up ruining the cats and things will overall suck.

Back in Michigan ... again.
Matt,

It really depends on what's normal for your car. Since you have a new engine it's tough to say what normal is...my 89 peaks between the n & o before the t-stat opens & cools it back down. Now my 95 MTX ran much cooler, would usually peak between the r & m, that was after a new t-stat & sending unit. So when I saw my 89 run as warm as it does I was concerned at first, but the cooling system is working properly so it's normal for the car.

Try changing your t-stat & see what that does. If it still runs up around the n-o range, then I wouldn't sweat it, as long as it doesn't climb higher.
