Hey all. I blew my TC back in November, and had to get my trans rebuilt. Since then, I've paid more attention to trans temps, and have noticed on most days be it 50F outside or 80F, the trans just seems to run too hot. Over the course of a 30 minute drive to or from work, with light traffic and some passes, I've noticed I'm typically parking with trans temps 200-205F. I've heard this trans runs hot (if it runs at all) but this seems too hot for Mercon V. Would love a more educated input on this. I have a year warranty on the transmission, and while my transmission guy gave me some shit because the stock trans barely handles oem power, and he said he'd be a bit ****** if I blow it within a year on e30 power, if he genuinely didn't flush or rebuild correctly my window is closing on getting that corrected if even possible without another seven grand.

The 6F55 in oem form can run up to 220 degrees on the regular. Thermostat opens at 190 on the trans so you're really not that much higher.

I upgraded my trans cooler and it knocked off about 15 degrees overall.

Oh wow seems I've been nerfing my driving habits for months now, this is quite enlightening (and yes Mercon LV, typo). Thank you guys for the info! In the interest of reliability, in terms of upgrades, is it common/wise to upgrade the cooler to maybe one from the PP? Or would there be potential side effects, like running too cool to lock the TC.

well i wont wholesale say too cool... but yes around or slightly larger that the PP is advisable. i believe there is a proper way to know just how big to go, and sending the oil to outside of the radiator will help the life overall of this transmission, and why the PP was an upgrade, it is trans/oil/ptu coolers if I recall. you will need to extend the cooler lines, so plan properly.

You may want to develop a workaround if you go with a bigger tr ans cooler. Minnesota winter temps may require a different cooling than summer.
Shouldn't be a problem. The transmission cooler has a thermostat. If the transmission is not warm enough the fluid bypasses the cooler.

In the South.
I followed his lead on this and noticed a significant drop in overall temp.
In this summer's hottest week, it was triple digits. Whether cruising at 80 or stuck in traffic the highest temp I saw on my OBDLink dashboard was ~165. (I can't remember exact number but know it was low 160s.)

I would tell you for us here in the south, above 220 is hot, and below 240, depending if you are a PP with cooler or not. Danger up to 250 and anything over cooking the transmission. Now the 220-240 I would say for lively driving, towing, or bad stop and go traffic with street temps causing ambient issues.

I am sure if i am wrong we will hear others. based on what you are saying, I wouldnt get concerned and just a reminder to change the oil more frequently.
