Guys I'm considering doing Rod Bearings since lately I've been hearing a slight knock come from the engine if it's revved slightly. I've never done them and I was wondering how hard would it be for me to do since I'm a beginner. I hardly drive the car since I want to repair as much as possible on it before I register it, so the knock has only been on the car for maybe 1 or 2 miles if that. Would that little bit of driving damage my engine?

Thanks for all the help in advance,
Enos

With a slight knock just a few miles, probably not. If you get the rod bearing kit (bearings, two rubber pan seals, black sealant, oil pick-up tube gasket) I supervise you doing the work at my place.

If your car has bad rust, you might want to pre-soak the 4 exhaust manifold nuts with PB Blaster for a few days prior AND buy four new ones at NAPA.

Rod bearings are actually very strait forward even for a beginner. If you have good common sence and a mechanical applitude you will be fine. Like the previous poster mentioned make sure it is not something else first like timming belt or cam chain tensioner. How many miles on on the motor?

Here is a good site to start reading up:

If you need any service manuals I have some parts of it in PDF.

The motor has about 212K miles on it. The previous owner had the timing belt and water pump replaced before I bought it.

Tom I would love to bring it over to your place to have your supervision but wouldn't it damage it more if I drove it out there?

Thanks again,
Enos

Definantly overdue for Bearings!!!!!

That's what I figured, but at least it just barely started knocking. Like I said before the car barely gets driven. In the year that I've owned it I've only put maybe 20 miles on it and most of those miles were from getting it home and then moving it to a new house. The most driving that it's gets to see is just little test drives around the neighborhood after some maintenance.

a slight knock isnt a big deal driving short distances. I had a slight knock and drove my car for several months to a year before i got around to changing the bearings. By slight, i mean you could barely hear it over the injectors clicking.

Enos,

Probably from where you're at in Gilbert. For a 50.00 donation to Bizzy, I will come and get you with the flat bed and haul it for you.

Tom,

Are you sure about that? I know I live quite a ways from you. I went ahead and donated to Bizzy, so if you want we can work out the details through PM's or over the phone if you want.

Thanks again in advance,

Guys,

I just thought about this last night and I'm not sure if it could be the cause but, when I first got the car I only put about 5 gallons of gas in it and I have barely driven it in over a year.
Could the knock be there just because it's gas that's over a year old and is starting to break down?

Either way I'm still going to change the rod bearings because I have to replace the oil pan gasket and I figure if I have to take it off I might as well get the bearings while I'm in there
