Terry--nc89sho-- replaced my rod bearings last week.

Rod Bearings

93 Red ATX with 180,500 miles. In the picture, #1 bearing is on the left and uppers are on top. Wear seems normal for uppers; lowers didn't have much wear at all. Took about 4 1/2 hours.

Bearings themselves were routine and didn't take much time. Only real problem was Y-pipe and exhaust ****** bolts--one of which broke. Bought replacements for $ 0.54 at hardware store. Used exhaust ****** gasket for 96 Taurus--$ 2.50 at O'Reilly. Clevite bearing kit from RCM Automotive for $60 plus shipping.

Most of my oil changes were WALMART related--either done by them or by me using their Super Tech oil and filters. Do you really need expensive oil?

I now have NO leaks of any kind--upper 60k done previously--and can park car in driveway without using the kitty litter every day. GREAT!!

This reinforces my belief that rod bearings will last a long time when the car sees frequent oil changes and driven hard only when up to operating temperature through its lifetime.

I agree.

However most of our cars have had a few owners and there is no way to really know the oil change schedule. Unless you start all over.

Was this an original owner car?
Had the previous owners replaced the bearings before?

I replaced my bearings and run her up to redline without worry.

Only thing i see is that this is an atx so it wouldnt have been reved or lugged as badly as a mtx would. But yea the history of the car would be cool to know.

Basically a one-owner since I got it in 1995 and it had only 29,000 miles on it, plus I knew the original owner. I'm sure it hasn't been run as hard as most on here.

I agree completely and have done the same.

Funny thing about previous owners. I know a fella back in Kalamazoo who starts up his impala first thing and is pedal to the metal right out of the shute. I do not envy the next owner of his car.

the onesshowing the most copper are the uppers, (rod end).

to give a comparison.. my 89 with 178K miles on it was way way worse than this one... but it's a 3 owner car and has an unknown maintenance history. just goes to show, maintenance is the key.
